This runtime plot is for a UK4AA eLED flashlight that uses four AA alkalline batteries. For this plot four Everactive Alkaline batteriese were used.

Equipment used is a Extech Mdl 401021 Light Adapter into a Radio Shack 22-805 multimeter with a PC interface that is using Scopeview software (V 1.08).

The vertical axis is in mVDC and is equivalent to one Footcandle per mVDC. The horizontal axis is one hour per division.

Be aware that your actual battery milage may vary from that indicted by this runtime plot

Runtime to 50% of maxium brightness is 13 hours 12 minutes

That is a remarkably sharp dropoff after loss of regulation. I would have expected either a stepdown switcher or a constant current linear regulator to have a longer [slower] falloff after loss of regulation. Sure is flat! Anything tighter than +/-10% of midpoint is gilding the lily IMHO.

Looks like a good emergency light when loaded with lithiums. Even has that nifty brilliant safety yellow color.

It's a nice enough yellow, but it's just ordinary safety yellow, not the brilliant fluorescent yellow that Princeton Tec uses.

Just wondering if anyone here has tried out the eLed module with the UKE 2L? I'd be greatly interested to know the runtime on Lithiums, as I'm considering purchasing just the eLed LA for my 2L. Thanks in advance...

[/ QUOTE ] I would think this is a good thing. It tells me that the regulation circuit uses up all of the jucie. Ok, yeah I guess it may be a bit difficult to find spare batteries with hardly any light but, the regulation /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif.
 
Yes, the eLED module works in the 2L with very impressive runtime, like 8 hours or something. See the 4aa eLED First Look thread for some details. But the eLED module has a LOT less throw than the xenon lamp.

My experience having exhausted a set of batteries in the thing is that the dropoff does not _look_ so steep. I got at least 8 hours of light about as bright as an Opalec newbeam, and then at least twice that about as bright as my Arc AAA LE. Then it was a bit dimmer than that, and then it went dark. I opened it, and the batteries were leaking. This testing was done by running the light overnight for several nights and took about a week (not on every night).

The Opalec brightness was with a voltage of about .75V per cell, which is "dead" by most definitions. They claim 80h of runtime out-of-regulation. I saw at least half that, and won't swear I didn't get the full 80. A day or two I left it on after I got up in the afternoon.

So, it'll run your batteries all the way down and make light, but maybe that isn't such a great feature. Especially on a light that is one of the most difficult to clean out. I was concerned about water getting into the switch.
 
Yeah, copious, sticky leakage. I was quite surprised. I've seen a little on the - end of alkalines from time to time but these just dumped out a clear gel. I think it was the (over 10 yr old, granted) energizers. I had 2 of those in there with a set of similar voltage-under-load radio shack cells.

And, I'm doing it again with E2 cells and Duracells, but plan to quit when it can't beat an Opalec, not when it's dimmer than an Arc AAA. I was using these cells in an Our Best Aluminum with an Epieon (Ledcorp) but the holder broke. They sent me a new one, but I think I may only run heavy duty cells, and thus the original single Nichia, in there. Any brand alkaline I have, and all rechargeables, are too big for the holder. They fit, but the top and bottom are bowed.

Maybe I'll ask them about it, as the Our Best Aluminum is now available from them with an Epieon, so they support the configuration.
