Hi folks !
As promised a long time ago I am posting my impressions about a pair of high quality LED-lights from the German manufacturer Schulzendorf.
The Schulzendorf Alpha1: 7 LED
The Schulzendorf Gamma1: 1W LS
As both units use the same principal body I'll comment on the main features of both lights first.
Both lights are 2 x CR123 units that come in black anodize only. They are extremely well manufactured in SF quality; perfectly machined, ideal knurling, double o-ring sealed bezel and o-ring sealed tail cap with just the right amount of lube. A weak point might be the anodize as mentioned by others, but I didn't want to ruin my precious lights, so I didn't test for myself. The only info I have about this is a statement of Schulzendorf about the anodize being 20mu, being standard. The threads screw down smoothly with just the right feeling to it. There is a lanyard whole recessed at the tailcap so that the lights may still stand stable on the end in candle mode.
They are activated by turning the bezel down, but it is not a "screw-down" action but instead a metal button makes a firm stop and contact (see pic).
Has a very pleasant and solid feel to it.
The overall size is a little bit smaller than an E2e. Batteries are loaded from the rear end, and they never rattle the slightest little bit.
The front end looks just like a SF: simply perfect. With sapphire glass lenses held in place by the same neat rings like on our beloved SFs.
Both units came packed in an Otter-Box which is neat but prettyuseless, a holster and/or lanyard would have been better.
They are watertight, I have no depth rating.
Dimensions: 110mm x 30/24 mm; 74g
Schulzendorf Alpha 1
The 7 LEDs are perfectly centered in a pice of solid plastic or what-the-heck material and produce a beam of perfect white with no green or purple tint and no blotches. Viewed from a few feet away it is a nice even flood, the close-up reveals the perfect rose-like pattern of the centered LEDs:
The output of this one is not too bright, it can compete with the well known and overdriven 3-4 LED lights we all know, like the
Led Lenser V2 Triplex
It is simply outgunned by the SL4AA7LED (I love this name), and the Inova X5T puts out more light with a better throw but with a poorer beam and color. According to the manufacturer these are Nichias LSB s-rank LEDs driven at 250mA.
No idea about runtime right now, should be impressive and way above 10 hours of high output.
Schulzendorf Gamma 1
This is the same as the Alpha1 except it uses an 1W LS with a NX05 optics. Beam quality and throw is what you can expect of this combination, brightness is really good. It kills the Arc LS1rev2, KL1 and KL3 and even slightly overpowers the Mini-LGI while it is eaten alive by the LGI-LE. Color is a creamy white with a little green tint, maybe a „2“ bin code. For me that is fine, but some of you „white-freaks“ might be displeased. It is whiter though than the Mini-LGI. Beam shots:
KL3 on brass UBH 3x123 – Gamma1 (all fresh cells)
Mini-LGI – Gamma1 (all fresh batteries)
No exact ideas about runtimes, I estimate them at a few hours (which is what we had expected) with a fairly steady output. These are only my subjective impressions though, I didn’t take any measurements. The unit gets warm after prolonged usage, but not hot.
So ... this sounds great, doesn’t it?
BUT ...
- these are only sold by www.globetrotter.de
- prices are 130EUR Alpha1, 160EUR Gamma1 (wow!)
- Globetrotter will not reveal any possibility to contact Schulzendorf, they only forwarded a few of my urgent flashaholic’s question to them and the answers were not quite satisfying ... thus I do not know about regulation (should be resistored IMHO), type of anodizing, LS bins, lumen-ratings, runtime graphs, ...
In the end, I like those two very much and I am awed by the quality of the manufacturing. IMHO the price tag IS justified. The only drawbacks are the missing infos we flashaholics require so much to finally judge a product.
