I have been looking at past threads where people have been putting R123's in a Streamlight Scorpion with a TL-3 bulb. The threads mentioned to only use unprotected cells to make this work. Like with other things in life, I believe you should ALWAYS use protection. I know AW updated the protection circuit on the 18650 batteries to work with higher current applications such as my Leaf+Surefire+mn16 light. Have the AW R123 protection circuits been updated to drive the Scorpion+TL3 setup without shutting down. If so, what kind of runtime am I looking at?
Thank you in advance:thinking:

AWs protected cells will work fine on the TL-3 lamp. His *new* protected cells all have thresholds set pretty high so they will fire up incandescent lamps within reason.. Keep in mind, that's it's pretty "hard" on the cells, technically speaking a RCR123 is at it's maximum rated power deliver at about 1.1A, the TL-3 is about 1.25A.... On cells that small, I don't see it as a significant danger. Please read up on the safety issues surrounding li-ion cells around the board so you can safely take advantage of the cell without endangering yourself. If you have the time, click on the link in my sig and have a read, I've got a lot of the important issues covered there.

Thank you so much for your quick responses. I think I will play it safe and keep it stock. (Is "stock" a bad word on CPF?)

You could try the higher output lamp and the Li-ion, but I do recommend that you get a glass lens to replace the poly lens and most likely you will need a metal reflector too. I have witnessed how much heat a streamlight strion can put out on it's stock battery and it was actually enough that it has left a burn mark (melted on the reflector).

I still have this combination in the Scorpion (2x AW RCR123 cells and the TL-3 lamp) and it is quite impressive, I have used it on and off for at least a year with no problem at all, but lately I am mainly using my Wolf Eyes lights with Lumens Factory lamps, these are now my favourite lights.

Ok, so where can I get a metal reflector and glass lens for the scorpion?
