These surplus headlamps are widely available online for around ~$10, though there is a good chance that shipping is going to double that. I got one recently. The bulb (there is a spare one in the battery housing) is a screw-in base (E10?) and before I can experiment with different bulbs, i have to figure out how to open it up. It sounds like it should be a ridiculously-simple act, but I am temporaily befuddled. I don't think that the front lens is meant to come out easily, which seems to leaves the two screws on the back of the housing, but starting to unscrew them felt like something was going to strip.
