May be a little off topic, but let's say I build a lantern out of a bunch of Crees, driver, and some machined aluminum case. No internal batteries used, just the light with a 9 to 18V DC input jack. I get a small demand for about 75 units from 75 interested customers. Do I need some sort of comformity standards like UL (underwriters Lab.) approval ?

Thanks, that's what I thought. My light is only DC from 12 to 16V maximum.

In that voltage range, I assume a car plug in? The main thing to watch is for voltage spikes, and of course, making sure it is safe with whatever battery packs are used. Warning labels are helpful.

Technically, if you have an oscillator over a certain frequency, you should get FCC approval. But then, technically you should pay taxes on the profits too.
