Any opinions on these? As I understand it, the new 9AN *will not* charge in place, the battery must be removed to charge.
Any other comments on which is preferred?

p.s. I have two 3P's and one 9P for sale, used seldom. $25 and $45. email me if interesed.

There are improvements that the 9AN has over the 9N that in my opinion make the inability for the B90 to be charged in the 9AN a small sacrifice.

The fact you get a rapid charger and two batteries, a Hard Anodised finish, a tempered Pyrex Lens, and I believe a LockOut Feature, as well as accessory compatibility with the M3 Bezel.

I forget if the 9AN can have a Lanyard. If not, it should have!

The 9AN wins for me.

Thanks for the input. Without in place charging, there is no trickle on the battery in the light. As nicads self discharge, this may require one to put in the fresh battery when one needs the light in a hurry. This is a significant issue if the torch is used often enough to warrant nicads, but not often enough to warrant lithiums. A "maintainance" charge on a nicad of about a C/50 rate is an important issue in this "middle ground" application.

A trickle charge like this is not good on the cells. It is better to have a really smart charger, which checks the battery every few seconds and starts a short charging burst from time to time. Self discharge is the value which has the largest tolerances. An older cell may easily have 5 times the discharge than a new one.

There are special cells made for 'infinite' trickle charge, and these cells usually have mass electrodes and are not very good for high current applications.

The debate over lithium vs nicad is best resolved by the amount of time you'll need it and what you're using it for.

I personally think that overall, the best SureFire light out there is the 6P/6R. The 6P is a 6v lithium powered flashlight that can be converted to nicad with a KR2 conversion kit. There are other 6v models as well that can be converted over to rechargeable: D2, Z2, C2. Both use the same bulbs and you have both a standard 65 lumen bulb or high output 120 lumen bulb. Something to consider?!
