Can you say, \"Durian\"?
For those wondering how bright Luxeon Star can get, wonder no more

I've just completed this shootout of 2 incandescent "big guns" versus a couple of Luxeon Stars (slightly overdriven). If you can tolerate the download time (72KB), here is the pictorial:

Can't wait for that flood of LS flashlights....

oh.. that first row of LED lights vs the LS was just to set the stage and to contrast the performance of some top-rated LED lights against familiar incandescents and of course, the Luxeons themselves

just in case u were wondering.......

Thanks, Lux!

I've done eyeball observations up to 50 feet for all these lights. Here's what I've found:

- If throw is what you want, the PT40 is still tops. It's intense, all right - but you'll have to live with the narrow beam. The sidespill is orangey, as is to be expected of incandescents. Gets really ouchy hot after five minutes or so.

- The Osram actually really starts to get into its own when shone for medium distances. Even though its a 'spot' light, it does very well flooding a general area. The light seems to 'seep' into more nooks and crannies than the other 2 lights. Definitely still the most sheer output, but yeah - orange light again. And after 30 seconds, it gets really *HOT*!

- The Luxeons kinda strike a nice medium. They throw wonderfully perhaps up to 60 feet, with a good wide, white beam center (about 5 feet across at 50 feet) that renders color superbly. There's a decent amount of sidespill too, but has that sorta 'pee green' tint. The heatsinks remain very touch-friendly even after extended runtimes of more than 45 minutes. The luxeons would be my hands-down choice for a bike headlight.

As soon as I can find a place to rig up my cam to take long distance pix, I'll post again

hotfoot,

Thanks for the fine work! Good info for all there.

Great pics, hotfoot! Are those the newer optics in the luxeon? I'm thinking of a dual luxeon set-up, with one of my luxeons using the older optics for the "flood" effect and one of them using the newer optics for a more "spot" effect. I know the differences are that great, really, but it should provide a good combo.

Yup, these are the Luxeons with the new optics. Long range pix coming up in a while, so that'll really show up the longer-range characteristics (and benefits) of the Luxeons. These new optics are really quite effective. I like these things!

Nice pics! Thanks. Looks like that dual LS kicks butt!

You can get more light out of a Tec 40 than by using KPR 113, but the comparison is still impressive. One other thing. I wonder how they compare at long range? Have you pointed that stuff at distant objects?
