Silverfox, need new NiMH AA\'s, suggestions???

I know the last time we spoke I asked you about what NiMH you liked and can't remember which ones they were or who sold them. I just found out my last batch 8 of Nextcell 2100's were duds. I check them on the La Crosse charger and found out they were between 400mA and 1200mA. So I ran them through the refresh, and 6 hours later they were done and still in the 500mA to 1400mA range.

So anyway I have 50 or so Duracell 1800's that are ok, in the 1400-1800 range, but I have no idea what is good out there, and please don't tell me Nextcell /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I need about another 16 cells for all the bad ones I have found with the La Crosse.

Who likes what and from where? I feel out of the loop for new NiMH cells at the moment.

Oh, I should add I don't need the biggest and latest, I am thinking in the 2000-2300 range and I am hoping to stay in the $2.50 per cell range.

I was thinking powerex 2300 or maybe the Energizer 2300 from Thomas?

In the 2.50 price range, I would think that the energizer 2500's that you can buy at Target would be the way to go!

What are you going to use the cells for, i.e. high or low drain?

Hello Brock,

I guess it is about time to do a NiMh battery comparison...

At this time I have only checked a few brands so keep that in mind. I have found the Titanium 2400's from www.amondotech.com are able to maintain voltage better than most others. I have been using them in my charger testing and have been quite pleased with their performance.

Here is a graph I did at 2 amps, but the trend was showing at 1 amp as well.

Sigbjoern, mixed use, likely in my wife's small camera, it pulls about 1.1amp, then who know what after that, 2-way radio's, kids toys, and of course lots of lights, although nothing to high drain.

Tom I am surprised at the voltage sag on the Energizers. I just bought 16 2500's at lunch, they were on sale for $14 so I thought what the heck. (Now I know why they are cheaper) That voltage sag will likely cause the camera to think they are dead. Although I am sure they will be fine for more typical uses. Probably the worst is my 2 1/2 year old like to use a 4AA CCFT book light at night and leaves it on all the time. It pulls about 350mA, they should be fine in there.

I'm also in the process of replacing some of my NiMH cells, so I did some research on what to buy.

From what I heard over here it seems most people are pretty happy with the Sanyo NiMH's, and that closely mirrors my own experience. I've got two old sets of Sanyo 1600 mAH cells, and after years of use (and abuse) they still have more than 90 percent of their original capacity. Much, much better than many of my newer cells. So I ordered some 2300 mAH Sanyo AA's.

SilverFox,
Those Titanium 24's look pretty good. Any idea if they will fit in a FiveMega AA>D battery adapter?

Yes, the Energizer's problem is the high internal resistance they have, hence the voltage sag, but the capacity looks to be good. So as you say, it depends on what device you are using them in, i.e. if it is a very voltage sensitive device or not, so it can be that they will work fine in your camera. However, if I were going to buy some new batteries, I would have bought the Titaniums, they look very good.

Well I went and bought 10 Titaniums and will pick the 8 best for the camera rotation. The Energizers are reading about 2.5 A in the LaCrosse, so that is good. I am sure they will be great in the little CCFT pulling only 350mA.

Thanks!!!

Oh heck it is a "book light" with about a 2 inch? ccft and the 4 batteries have a clip that attaches to the book. Who the heck sold them, just a sec... ok it is
voyager book light

I don't remember where I got mine, but I know it was cheaper then that.

SilverFox,

Have you tested the Sanyo HR-3U 2100 or 2300 or 2500 mAh?

Hello Jim,

No. If you would like to send me some... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Silverfox, need new NiMH AA\'s, suggestions???

I bought 12 Sanyo HR-3U 2300 mAh a few weeks ago. Charged them once with the LaCrosse, then discharged them. All 12 of them had a capacity between 2240 mAh and 2340 mAh. That's pretty good going I think.

Today I checked the capacity again. The discharge rate after 14 days at room temperature was about 0.80 percent per day.
