if you wish. I want to get her a light about the same size as Tiablo A8, (it can't be too small) but it must use AA batteries, have good 'flood' (not spot), and importantly must have a very simple UI - no SOS / flashing / memory function / whatever :shakehead

Doesn't have to be stupidly bright: the flood is important, and the switch. Ideally just off / low / on (repeat!)
*edit: sorry must be a clickable switch, not a twistie!

Actually I may have answered my own question, how about a LumaHunter : M3 Transformer with turboforce head and OP reflector?

is there anything similar but cheaper out there?

I have it and it is a very good light. However IMHO it is too "rich" for the intended use i.e. you would simply discard all the components that make it expensive. Why don't you have a look at Lumapower LM301:

http://www.qualityflashlights.co.uk/termekekmain.php?csoportid=43

simple, well made 1 x AA light with a nice floody beam.:)

Quite like both - price would end up being about the same inc p&p it looks like.
The Lumapower LM301 looks nice but the reflector looks small - do you really think the flood is nice?

Thanks BTW

You did not specify size requirement ...

imho ANY light You, we, anyone deeply into lights, and especially 1 AA is not suitable for Your mum.
She wont appreciate tho have the brightes one available with a runtime of just 1 hour.
Anything I give to the unenlighted as presents absolutely must have a runtime of 4-5 hours!

size req. as per Tiablo A8 (as stated above! :nana:)

I wanted it that sort of size so its not too small for her. However, I'm open to this. Thinking about it, 123's would be acceptable as a power source as I could supply her with them (not rechargeable ones though).

KV - how long does the 301 last for on one AA? (roughly)

edit* found this on their site:
A single 2600mAH NiMH can offer 95minutes of nearly-flat output for LM301 at Hi-out (350mA forward current) and 1,600minutes at Low-output.

FYI my mother (86) uses an incan Energizer light powered by 2 AA alkalines. She does not like LED's white light.... I have provided her with a box of batteries and she is perfectly able to change them when needed.

A true flashaholic's mummy....:grin2:

The 3W Seoul is not the same size as he A8 but it is pretty big for a 2AA light. But no low output.

The Lumapower LM31 might work better but it is smaller then the A8.

I have the LM31 and I think it is probably a bit small. I will say the LM has a simple interface, with 2 levels. Maybe you could show her something the same size and see if she likes it. Pretty easy for her to carry with her in purse, on lanyard, or in the pocket. I am disappointed the LM31 won't tail stand.

How about the Fenix L2T? It's a slim light, but a little bigger. Dead simple interface, but there is the twist involved for output level change.

I have the LM301 and find it a nice generous size... and I have huge hands.
I find the flashlight redeeming in all its qualities with a generous flood.
And it uses the most common and available battery on the planet... AA.

It's on sale right now at batteryJunction for $31 with a %5 discount

You should look at the D-mini. The reflector is about the same size as the M3 with the turbo head. It pushes a good beam. and you can get it foer about 50 bucks or a bit more for the new digital version.:candle:

For some reason the provided GITD switch rubber cover is shorter than the red and black ones. If you install it the light will tail stand safely. :D

Hey Thanks! I never thought to check that!

Your right, I put in the GITD cap and now it has solid tail stand. I guess the other one is, maybe just the way, or they intend it for people with bigger fingers, or gloved operation.

I gave my mom an Arc LS and she hated it. The pushbutton was too hard for her to operate. I swapped it for a Princeton Tec Blast which has an easy to operate twisty and she liked that a lot better.

Anyway for your mum I suggest one of the 3aa multi-led lights. I have a Tek-tite Trek 4 next to my bed and it's great, very waterproof, simple on-off twisty that's easy to operate, silly long runtime (20+ hours at least), big enough to easily find it (not pocket sized), nice wide flood and not crazy bright. I have X1 glowring attached to the lanyard hole so it's easy to find in the dark.

What would be wrong with Streamlight Luxeon 4a poly? I have 2 and they are great, simple, reliable lights.
