Smallest & Brightest LED???

Which led torch qualifies as the smallest and brightest torch - I'm not including the key chain variety (photon etc..)?

Happy T-Day!

brightest led torch by sizexweight? ... guessing, off the top of my head, mmmm, until the Arc LS arrives, the Streamlight Baton ? (3 N cells with 3 LEDs, in a minimal space)?
....about the Surefire 12P, maybe the brightest, but not for very long, as the battery voltage drops relatively rapidly, even with lithium cells...something to keep in mind...

oh I thought you said brightest "period". The brightest LED flashlights in the medium category are the Lightwave 4000 and the Trek 1900. Smaller than that I'd try the new Arc LS. Actually when the beam shots start to come out more maybe we will see the Arc LS is brighter than the Lightwave 4000

Hi flashlightguy,

Since it's a legitimate LED question, I'll move this over to the LEDside, you'll probably get more responses there.

Ted TL, the "SureFire 12P" - you mean the 12PM surely ? That's a fierce-style incandescent, not a LED !

Must get me one of them thar Streamlite Baton thingies.

Yep. Si. Ya. Da. Affirmative.

Something;
I know I know! I own a 12PM! I was responding to something in Lightuser's post about the 12P being the brightest, which he has evidently since deleted when he realized the question was about LED lights...that's whatcha get for not "quoting" the post you're responding to I guess!

Princeton Tec Attitude is pretty decent for its size. 3 leds, 4 x aaa batts. Waterproof and good light output for walking around at night. I like the ARC AAA - but this is a fair bit brighter.

Lightwave perhaps, but remember we are figuring in size and weight as equal factors to brightness right? so maybe the Baton would nudge out the Lightwave even with it' extra LEDs and D cells, by it's smaller size and lighter weight?
(edit) OK I see Flashlightguy's original premise did not include weight -- so I am arbitrarily adding it on at this point...to the formula, I mean...

I missed the inova5 discussion, where is it, or how about a link?

Found it, Ted-see Kogatana's thread started 11/17/01

thanks! - read it. I almost went for it, except then cavedave mentioned it uses a resistor to drop the voltage from 6 something to 3 something - I agree, that's a waste of electricity to heat...even if it does use 2 lithium123s (hoping; perhaps it isn't true about the resistor??)... and being aluminum (shucks, no s.s.!) it's probably on the heavy side too...though there was mention of a future hitec plastic model...

Clark, what is this bulb changing I hear about for the Attitude? Can you replace the LEDs with a halogen bulb? Or does that require different Attitude body??
..so, should we start measuring the lights for weight and volume?
..this seems the way to establish which is the "smallest and brightest" --?
..mm, my highschool education pays off at last; for volume you dunk the light in water and measure the displacement in cc's. right?
..even the non-waterproof lights could probably survive a momentary immersion..I'll leave it to someone else to figure the formula to produce a size/weight/ factor number..I realize measuring the total output is problematical, but if we use a uniform test, it could give an idea of the size/weight/light ratios...anyone else interested in this??

Hello Ted the LED - somewhere in the topic "search" section I saw several posts about a replacement bulb that is really bright that is made by Princeton Tec. It apparently fits another PT model, but can be dropped in the attitude when you need really bright light...

Maybe someone out there can help with your request.

After I got my Night Buster Clipper 3, I retired my batonlite. Clipper 3 is the brightest LED by its size (only 2.5 oz). It's smaller than Attitude but much brighter (due to its reflector?). It's also brighter than batonlite even with AAA rechargables.

It's always clipped on my belt alongside with my E2. Brightness and size asides, it's also very *usable* at most environment due to its versatile clip design.

For more information, check Brock's site http://www.uwgb.edu/nevermab/led.htm.

I would have to agree, for the size the Nightbuster is the brightest, smallest light. It is a 3 AAA light with 3 LED's with no resistors, while the Attitude is close it has a 4th battery and uses a resistor so it wastes a bit of power. The attitude is completely waterproof while the Nightbuster is water-resistant.

Ted, the Rage and Attitude have the same body, 4 AAA batteries, so you can interchange the heads. The rage is a great little light; it used to be my everyday carry light until the E2 came out.

Until the LS comes out-how about the Inova X5? vcal
_____________________________________________

Here are my brief reviews comparing the Inova X5 to 3 other LED lights

COMPARISON: INOVA X5, LEDDA, ATTITUDE, LW2000

In order of perceived brightness:
1) Inova X5
2) Nightbuster Ledda
3) Princeton Tec Attitude
4) LightWave 2000

*INOVA X5

SIZE: 4 5/8" x ¾",
WEIGHT: 3oz (with batteries)
LED'S: 5 (white)
POWER: 2 x 123
CONSTRUCTION: metal (aluminum?)
WATERPROOF? - YES
COLOR: Black or "aluminum"
PRO: Very bright and small
CON: Less peripheral beam spread than some other lights

Easily pocketable, waterproof, sleek and very sturdily built with a futuristic appearance. (See Kogatana – 10/19/01) Available in black or "aluminum" color. Definitely The brightest LED light for its size that I've tried. Gets very warm to the touch, but maintains excellent brightness for 4-5 hours. After 4 hours of steady burning it was still as bright as the Attitude or the LW 2000 with fresh batteries. It can easily be operated with one hand, and is the light I always carry on my belt, in preference to all other
LED's (until the LS comes out). (Note that the beam pattern has somewhat less peripheral spread than some other lights)

NIGHTBUSTER LEDDA

SIZE: 7 5/8" x 11/16 (barrel), 1" (bezel)
WEIGHT: 4.9oz (with batteries)
LEDS: 4 (white)
POWER: 2 x AA
CONSTRUCTION: Metal
WATERPROOF? – "WATER RESISTANT"
COLOR: Black
PRO: Very bright
CON: Awkward size/shape

Probably the brightest and physically the longest 3AA light. Finely and apparently strongly built (though mine had an intermittent on/off problem that I partly solved by crimping and raising the positive terminal of the battery in contact with the LED board). The LEDs appear to be permanently attached to the head. This light is just about as bright as the Inova 5X at first, but becomes dimmer within approximately ½ hr. At the end of 4 hours it is still noticeably dimmer than the Inova. The light is impressive, but I have found it unwieldly for everyday carry, and I much prefer the Inova.

*PRINCETON TEC ATTITUDE

SIZE: 4 ¾" x 1" (Bezel and body width) x ½" (Body "thickness"
wink.gif

WEIGHT: 2.5oz (with batteries)
LEDS: 3 (white)
POWER: 4 x AAA
CONSTRUCTION: Plastic
WATERPROOF? - YES
COLOR: Translucent black, etc.
PRO: Bright and small
CON: Light spill-back through translucent head

The attitude is probably the best and brightest small all round everyday carry alkaline-driven light. I would be wearing it on my belt right now if there were no Inova 5X. It's at least as bright as the LW 2000 (though it won't burn bright as long) and it is very light. There is one design flaw: The translucent body permits annoying light spill-back where the body flares to meet the bezel. This can be cured by wrapping it with black plastic tape. Princeton Tec really needs to attend to this issue. If you also happen to have a Princeton Tec Rage, another solution is to transfer the Attitude's LED assembly into the Rage which is physically identical but is solid black.

LIGHTWAVE 2000:

SIZE: 7 1/4" x 1 1/4" (Head) x 7/8" (barrel)
WEIGHT: 4.5 oz. (With Batteries)
LEDS: 4 (white)
POWER: 3 x AA
CONSTRUCTION: Plastic
WATERPROOF? - YES
COLOR: Black
PRO: Quite bright, acceptable body size/shape
CON: Not an everyday carry light.

A decent, reasonably priced basic light, with brightness approximately equal to the Attitude, though the LW2000 is considerably larger and heavier. Some folks turn up their noses at this light for its non-exotic build and its heavy and sometimes misleading promotion to the general public. In fact this is a good light, and brighter than much of its competition, including the Eternalights.
