I bought a SW receiver and played around with it several times from my home in the US. I found quite a few stations transmitting, mostly in languages that I don't understand. I found nothing that I wanted to tune in again. I lost interest pretty quickly.
I suppose if I were isolated somewhere out of the country, I might have a different view of it. With no access to English TV, AM/FM radio, internet, etc. I could see it being a lifeline. But it would have to get to that point for me to turn it back on.
