I have a beautiful Wood Solitaire that is built by will.

But I hate its terrible beam. So, I mod it as follows.
1. Remove the solitaire switch and enlarge the hole about 7mm diameter. (I could not get smaller inductor.)
2. Build boost circuit using Max1797 chip.
3. Reduce the Rebel star to 10.9mm
4. Asssemble the pill and fix the McR10-Rebel reflector, file down the diameter of McR10 around 0.1mm, on the Rebel using epoxy

LED is driven about 300mA with NiMh 1.2v battery.

Nice Job. How much LED current do you think it's running? It looks like tha Solitare reflector really likes that Rebel. Wow.

Oops :ohgeez: I didn't read your post thoroghly. Sorry. I usually don't miss stuff like that. You even have a picture of the reflector assembled on the converter.
At an LED current of 300mA, your battery current must be pretty high. It probably works best on Nimh cells.

thats a beautiful unique little light. Would you be interested in making those pills for sale? Id be interested in a price if so.
Thanks for posting this.

Thanks Guys!
If you use reflector of rotating design on the Rebel, you have to prevent the short circuit of Rebel. Reflector rub the lead of Rebel and will make a problem. So, I made it one piece pill.

That's gorgeous!

I have a 2AA MagLED from Will, didn't think to send him a Solitaire - how much was the wood mod?

I have a Solitaire with MJLED on the way, might need to get it tricked out with wood!

Excellent job with the LED centering. The beam really looks great.
I'd be interested in a pill, or sending my Solitaire for you too mod as well, if you're up for it =)

I did not expect you guys have much interest in this mod.
But I have no plan to build more pills because I have no remaining parts.
Sorry and thanks for your interesting.

Absolutely gorgeous Soli, but...

This thread is (almost) worthless without more pictures!

... especially of the electronics build. :nana:

Wow ROK thats super cool
If your not going to make these can you share your circuit with us?

Do a search for the MAX1797 from Maxim IC. Lambda lights has a schematic that is good to go (scroll to the bottom of the page). The chip is easy to build with if you are already comfortable with SMT. It only requires a 10uH inductor and two ceramic capacitors. Any value from 10uF to 47uF will do.

I have build these without a circuit board (dead bug style), and they end up the size of a small pea. However, you could make a circuit board similar to the one in the link above, and fit it into any small AAA light with ease (10mm +/-).

Another chip that I like to use for single cell lights is the Linear LTC3490. These recently became available for purchase again after a long absence. They only require a 3.3uH inductor, a 1M resistor and a 4.7uF capacitor. They are the larger SO-8 package, too. Follow the basic schematic in the datasheet. FWIW, I always use a Lithium primary cell in AAA lights.

Thanks datiLED, gotta love how long those E2 cells run, thanks for the leads. Its time to salvage some boards and get an IC or 2
