There are presently two models
1. the seller collects the taxes:

2. The USPS collects the taxes:

(not my pics, images collected from posts on Reddit)

Some buyers think they can bypass the new fees by buying from sellers with USA stock.. which I think is true.. But once restocking from China happens, I expect the fees will be applied, one way or another.

Please avoid any purely political commentary if you reply to this thread.. Please try to offer facts and links, beyond random speculation.

well, the 22.5% Tariff will definitely give me pause

I ordered a D3AA on January 29th, that cost me $42
(I dont have tracking, dont know if it cleared Customs yet)

Im waiting to see if the USPS asks me to pay an additional $9.45. Time will tell.

I wonder if this will effect Jackson Lee?

I'm just very happy that I've already purchased all the lights I really wanted by the time the end of 2024 rolled around.... Granted I've been collecting for decades and have enough lights to bury all of Manhattan Island underneath my collection. But that's besides the point. 🙂

Judging by the responses to the USPS thing on Reddit, a lot of people don't really understand how their lights are actually transported from China.

Most enthusiast lights shipped to the United States and Canada are sent by services that consolidate a bunch of packages, load them onto planes, process the customs clearance, and hand off to a domestic delivery service. Typically the only time USPS will handle one of our packages is if they're the end delivery service domestically, after it has already cleared customs. The shutdown and now ambiguous duty and tax collection through USPS doesn't impact most flashlight orders.

Consolidation services like Yunexpress have already announced that packages will be DDP (delivered duty paid), which means the shipper will pay them a fee as well as the duty and tax. That's what Neal is passing on to US customers. Other Chinese stores and manufacturers will have to decide how they approach this. I suspect there will be a lot of shameless underdeclaring of value, but also price increases since every shipment to the US will attract an extra fee as well as at least some duty.

With respect to the amount, Neal is correct that it's 22.5%. Flashlights normally have a 12.5% duty rate in the United States, but consumers never paid that because of the de minimis exemption. Now you pay that and the new 10% tariff on all Chinese goods.

true for my area in USA, USPS is the "last mile" service.

In my case, companies such as DHL and Pitney Bowes, move package batches coming out of USA customs, to their own sorting centers, where new labels are attached, for USPS to deliver.

The USPS Shipping Partners then hand off the packages to a USPS hub, which then routes the package to my local USPS, for delivery into my mailbox.

Did not know that, thanks for explaining DDP..

That seems like the most convenient arrangement for me as the buyer.. I just pay a single all inclusive price (with 22.5% fee), at the time of purchase.

Just like anything all good things come to an end. I have way too many flashlights so i’m not hurt at all.
I do foresee my next purchase if there is one will possibly be an American made light. So instead of 2,3 or 5 new lights it may just be one really nice “Made in America” light. That’s not a bad thing now is it?
So many mom & pop companies have gone away and apparently more will cease to be this year so hopefully we save some and get some back.
Just some thoughts.
I wonder how this will affect all our American lights being shipped to China? Or any American products?

Who's Neal?
A Chinese man that has an online flashlight store in China called nealsgadgets.

He is not a manufacturer, just a reseller.

The first pic in this thread shows his comments about the new tariffs.

It isn’t a bad thing. That’s what my collection is becoming. Less and less made in China lights, remaining lights are robust made in USA lights like Malkoff, Elzetta, and Peak.

Yep, support those small businesses! Buy more Malkoffs and Peaks!

And i would have but some of the USA made lights didn’t have operating systems i liked. At least how i remember it but i was liking Anderil 2 and have since become a bigger fan of the simpler Convoy 4 mode set up. So it may open up my options on getting American made. I will definitely check out those you just mentioned. Thanks.

Expect China to respond in a negative way.
Screw it! China has practiced blatant Protectionist policies for decades.
High time America did as well.

Emisar did not add any Tariff fees to my Jan 29 order.
It has not shipped yet (CNY til the 14th).

So far, Nobody (on CPF, BLF, nor Reddit), has posted a mention of having paid a Tariff.
