Thoughts? No more than $100 or so. CR-123 (18650) or AA preferred. Reliability goes without saying.

John

Surefire G2X single output. Should be just under you price limit.

A small lower output light might also be nice.

Just one output mode so no confusion in a stressful situation, should be durable and nothing much that can get damaged by sand and dirt which is usually everywhere for an infantryman 😗

I work with ex soldiers (uk) and they got issued surefires which run on cr123,i can't see a 18650 light being any use at all as how can it be charged? That recommended light above looks ideal, but as you would need a lower setting for while you are in camp the two stage, or even a second aa powered light might be useful as it covers most situations.still would of thought they would get issued one and a rifle mount

I'm in the same situation as the OP. I ended up giving my son a Surefire E1B with an F09 filter (red), and will be sending him a Surefire Kroma to replace one he lost. The point is, no soldier should deploy with only on light, and spend the money on quality lights. Lives are at stake.

Everyone I've spoken to who has been deployed recently has complained about a lack of headlamps.

Get him an LED Surefire handheld, and a headlamp with a low level setting.

SureFire 6P + Malkoff M60 (or M61 or M61LL)

SureFire E1B works but I would be concerned about using it with gloves. It has no knurling and is designed for belt clip or pocket clip. Infantry soldiers should use holsters or pouches instead.

Get him a AA light. CR123As aren't easy to come by, especially when you get deployed overseas.

EagleTac P20A2 MkII or P100A2 for primary, followed by a 4Sevens Quark Tactical AA as backup will fit the bill very nicely. If you get both P100A2 and Quark Tactical AA, your total should be around $100, plus a little more for S&H.

Arent batteries issued by military?
If so i recommend surefire
LX2 is a good light with a night-piercing beam, shines far

L1 or LX2 were really popular with the Armyguys when I was deployed...the easy low-high setting, makes it a great infantry light. If he is going to be using this "in the field" (i.e. patroling areas in the country), then he'll need somethnig with Night vision freindy settings, in which case I'd recommend the kroma Mil-Spec.

V2 seem to be better than kroma
With more output, use high output led other than 5mms , 2 stage UI, cheaper by $25, less bulky, no magnetic control which has a lower chance to fail, TIR for throw

This is indeed the friendliest group on the internet. Thanks to your recommendations and the generosity of a forum member, Justin (my son) will be taking 2 flashlights. One is a Surefire 6P with a Malkoff mod that was generously loaned by a CPF member. The other is yet to be determined, but will be a smaller, multistage EDC type lamp that can be carried or possibly affixed as a headlamp. Hopefully, I can finish up my research and have him something in a few weeks!

Consider the zebralight h31 or h51. headlamp, handy edc light with a myrad of hands free options.

I would recommend the 4Sevens Quark AA R5 tactical that runs on a single AA battery, together with a Fenix Headband it can be used as a headlamp as well. The light mounted on the headband will fit snugly in a issued grenade pouch. A red filter and a diffuser can be bought from the Fenix brand as well (just need a little sanding to make it fit perfectly.)

This little light will prove it self. It will withstand a lot of beating as is waterproof (tested by me at 3.5 m for half an hour - no problem.)

Good luck to both of you!

How bout Surefire's Saint high CRI
Waterproof approved by Surefire with acceptable price + Surefire's quality, and infinitely variable brightness
As well as their perfect warranty, they cover any damage or disfunction, IMO critical for a military person as he has a higher chance to poof it than civvies

John,

I am sorry that I don't have a suggestion for a light, but I would appreciate it if you would pass along my thanks to your son. I am thankful for the men and women who go in harm's way to protect us.

Joanne

Ditto on Joanne's comment John - Many thanks to your son for serving - and to all! As for lights - Zebralights offer a good variety and form to include AA & CR 123 options. Nt to mention a variety of beams that should be adaptable to most situations - also a very durable light.

By the way, which unit is the son going?
Like tank driver, patrol, engineer etc.
Would be better to suggest a suitable light if we may know about it
