Moderators, please consider moving this to the reviews section.

I received this light last week from Lumapower. I want to thank Ricky from Lumapower for letting me evaluate this. It is a very nice light, with my sample showing no cosmetic flaws anywhere. I have to disclose I'm partial to warm creamy tint and this sample has what I consider perfect tint though I realize this is highly subjective. The light is rated 100 lumens on NiMH AA's and the only other similar light I have to compare with is a Nitecore DI which is rated 130 lumens on high. Comparing the two lights tell me that relative to each other, the numbers are feasible. I'm not going to post beamshots since there is nothing extraordinary about the beam. If you've seen the beam of a Cree from a small textured reflector, it's probably similar to this.

There are three levels and to me they are spaced just about right. Switch is "normal" clickie so you get momentary with a slight push and click on for sustained use. You switch levels by toggling on/off within two seconds. The light stores the last setting used which is nice. Did I say it only has three levels? That is just about right. There are no strobes, no SOS, no silly gimmicks. The medium output is very useful and I'd probably stick to this for 90% of my use. Low is also very useful. It's low enough for me such that it doesn't screw up my night adjusted vision if I have to use it in the middle of the night. Runtime using 2700mAH NiMH is rated 100 min on high, 2000 min on low. I haven't done a runtime but current measurement shows the following:

High=1.9A
Med=430mA
Low=20mA

I repeated the measurement with a power supply and confirm the current is around 1.8A-1.9A at 1.2V. This is quite high and I wonder whether the tail switch is up to the task. This suggests a runtime of about an hour and a half with my sample, not quite 100 minutes. Based on current draw, you will probably get more than 2000min on low if you have good 2700mAH cells. I've run it overnight (10 hours) on low and the 2000mAH Eneloop still had plenty of life left in it.

I do not have Li-Ion AA's but using 3.6V from a power supply, I get the following current draw:

High=450mA
Med=100mA
Low=20mA

Output does measure a bit higher with 3.6V input vs 1.2V. The rated output is 130 lumen at 3.6V vs 100 lumen at 1.2V. I don't know about the absolute numbers but the results I get is consistent on a relative scale. Personally I don't see a benefit to using Li-Ions in this light unless you want moderately more output that only a light meter will be able to tell apart. I suspect runtime will be similar on high (again, based on current draw)

My perceived quality is very good. As mentioned above, no cosmetic flaws in the anodizing, no dust in the lens/reflector, general fit and finish is very good. It does tail stand for those that find this useful. Knurling is fairly smooth and there is no nasty "crenelations" that some find attractive (I don't, at least for something that I'm going to stick in my pocket) There is a pocket clip and I do not see a way to remove it. I prefer not to have a pocket clip on a light this size but that's just me. I do think the pocket clip appears delicate and don't know how it will stand up to use. There is glow in the dark O-ring inside the lens and the boot over the tailcap is also GITD. The light will tail stand if clicked ON. It wobbles a little if you try to stand it with the light switched to OFF.

What's in the box? Manual, light, spare o-rings, warranty registration. Could probably use a spare switch, as well as instructions for replacing it since I haven't been able to figure out how to remove it to clean it.

I do not know what the price is so I can't comment on value. If I was to guess on street price, I'd guess $50-$60. You can decide on value based on my personal opinions above. After using it for the past week, I've decided this is a keeper if the price point is what I am guesstimating above.

Looks good. I'm getting to like the new Lumapower lights. Can't wait to get one.

BTW, is the memory mode the same as the Incendio (ie. It has to be reset every time you turn it on)?

Thats 1.9A from the cell, not to the emitter. Boost circuit and all...

Is the light fully regulated for flat output on NiMh, Li-ion or both?
Thanks

Can you explain what you mean by having to have it reset? The memory retains the last setting used as long as the last setting was on for at least two seconds.

At 1.9A on high, does it get very hot?

It gets very very warm. It's not uncomfortable to hold. However, I'm a desert rat and I'm comfortable when the temperature outside is above 108F :D

The light uses constant current regulation. It will draw less current (as shown in my data) as input voltage goes up.

As I've already gotten a few emails about this I thought I'd post here. :)

Yes, we have these in stock but the official release is planned for tomorrow so we need to beg your patience for 1 day. :)

Nice review CM and I agree with everything you have posted

I also have this light and I really like the light, I can't add much to what CM has already posted but I have now had had a little time to work with the light and I really like the user interface. As CM mentions the three levels are perfectly set and the ability for the light to remember the last setting is a huge plus. I also like the ability to change the light settings without having to fully engage the light switch. I can maneuver through all of the setting very quickly and I would think most people should find this light easy to use. The one thing the user must remember is for the light to remember the last setting the light must be on and in the setting for at least two seconds. When I first received the light I thought there could be a problem with the light remembering the settings but as a last resort I read the instructions and the light works as it is supposed to.

I like the size of the light, compared to other AA lights I have this light is more compact. It would be nice if the pocket clip was removable, I personally tend to pocket a light this size so the need for a pocket clip for my needs is not necessary but this is my preference. The pocket clip is small so I don't think anyone who would normally pocket this light would notice the clip nor have an issue with it. I found no cosmetic flaws at all and the tint is exactly as CM post. The light has a feel of quality; I know this may not be saying much too some people but the light is very well made and it feels good in the hand. As far as value and cost I have no idea what the asking price will be but I generally agree with CM's comments. I could see paying a little more and if the price is a little more I would pay it.

To sum up my impressions I believe most people will be very satisfied with the light and the Connexion will now be my AA preferred light. Great Job Lumapower!!

I will try to post some beam shots tonight.

Nice, Matt can you tell us the price? Or all info tomorrow?

Also: I applaud Lumapower and its retailers for not releasing this info till the light is ready for release. I find it very frustrating waiting on lights for months after they are announced.

..
:grin2:. So basically .... to put it in the simplest terms .....

This is a larger version of the IncenDio - for AA size batteries. It even has the same trim ring around the clicky.

But is the clicky still un-removable and non-servicable by user even on this model ?

If so ..... I wish they'd change that

CM.... please show us a picture of the pocket clip which is not removable - as you say

.

Wow, I love that design. Knurling on the ends, finger grip in the middle. Sweet. Trim-ringed tail is a great touch, definitely 'classes' up the light.

Nice review Chris, hope all is well with you and the family. Glad to see another Mesan, Lebkuecher, agree with you. MattK had hinted in the Lumapower Incendio thread that more variations were coming out. Looks like it will be worth a try.

Interesting. Any dimensions for it? I hope it is made specifically for the AA cell and is as slim as possible and not just a stretched Indendio body. The Incendio is great for being as small as possible for a CR123 cell.

This is a beam shot, the light was about 3 feet from the wall.

And here are some shots of the clip. As you can see the clip is small and I do not notice it when the light is in my pocket.

Using the ceiling test and comparing it to an Arc AAA I measures at 7.5 in an integrating sphere I would say the low setting would be between 4 and 5 lumens. It is about 2/3 the brightness of a new version of an Arc AAA (a 2 years old Arc not from the old company)
