Sooo... How do you EDC when not attached to keys?

depends on what I plan on doing..
neck worn on a length of high tech nylon/spectra cord.

or of the light has a clip, clip on.

or in a holster.
Most of my best lights have their own custom leather holster.

IMHO this is a very difficult question. This is something you will need to discover
what works best for you.

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to carry a flashlight.

There is what works best for you based on your level of activity, the light you plan on carrying, and other factors... Like do you want others to know that you have a light on you.

OH I highly recomend that you buy 2 or three ARC AAA flashlights and install one on each of your keychains.
This insures that you will have a working light you 100%.

I have had an ARC AAA on my key chain for as long as they have been available. Yes it looks a little worn BUT it works perfectly and allways has. These lights are designed to last and last.
Want to spend a little more get a new titanium saphire from MCGIZMO for $150 OR SO. A aaa LIGHT WHICH will outlast you and your kids...

I don't carry my keys around all day (but I do have a separate one on the key ring)... ...I like the holster on a carabiner (or a snap-link).

My everyday light is a $11 DX cheapo (UltraFire C3 Cree 1xAA or 1x14500 Flashlight w/ Holster) It even came with the free holster.
So far it has held up well to daily carpentry abuse - dust, in a tool belt and dropped many times...

LIKE MINDS!
My flashaholic brother!...:goodjob: that is the same one, and with a carabiner too, I carry, Post #40 (link). Soon to update to the R2 LED version, a brighter version of the same EDC. :twothumbs

I did a double take on your picture, thought I was looking at me! 😱

On a lanyard tucked in a coin pocket. I cross a suspension bridge on the way home and I am deathly afraid of dropping my baby in the water... 😱

This strap goes across the chest and whichever light I happen to be EDC'ing goes front-n-center just below the cellphone pouch attached that green elastic paracord with quick release

Or thi.........well you guys get the point

First of all, a light is always attached to my keys and sure you can buy three lights for your key chains or you grab one, two, or three of the McGizmo or similar mini and micro clips so you can switch easily from set to set. 97% of the time I carry a second light as well and pocket clips are great or I carry a small CR123 light in my watchpocket. My daypack usually has at least one light and quite often a headlamp.

Bezel up and down option similar to the newer Surefire clips are nice especially for smaller lights, giving you the ability to clip the light to a hat brim for hands free word. The strongest and most reliable clip that I have found is the McGizmo Pocket Clip with the exception that it is a one way clip and won't clip onto a hat brim but I love the holding power of the McGizmo option because I don't have to worry about loosing my light.

I like to neck carry my D10. I worked out a way to have the light come off the cord, or have the cord separate if it were to get caught on something or someone pulls it. I've used this method everyday for about nine months and it's worked great - no unwanted releases, no hard yanks to my neck. It has let go about six times since I started using it this way.

I use telephone cable wire to make an attachment point to the light, just long enough for two twists [about two inches]. This will release if pulled hard. I join the cord on itself with heat shrink tubing. I use 2x shrink - a larger shrink factor might not let go soon enough, although for the cord I'm using now I add a drop of hot glue on the very end of the cord to help prevent it from sliding through the tube too easy. Other cord I've used didn't need this. If I had 3x shrink factor tubing for this cord it would probably be ideal.

Please excuse the blurryness.
One thing I've found I really like about this method of carry is when I hold the light in my mouth, I can just let it go anytime and it doesn't drop.

Now what I really want to work out is a way to release the light and put it back on.

I take a modular approach to my keys. I divide them into functional units, each on its own split ring, and put whichever units I think I'll need that day onto a Ti screw link (same idea as the things you get at Brookstone with little 'key keepers' that attach to split rings and then can be attached or released from a main fob, except my way is smaller, lighter and cheaper). Key/fob for each car is in it's own unit (2 total), I also have a house key unit and a work-stuff (SecureID, etc) unit. So I always have an Arc-AAA-P, a Vic Classic and house keys on my keychain. Work stuff optional, keys for the correct car for the day optional.

If I'm going to work that's all I have, thanks to dress code.

If I'm not going to work, I'm generally wearing cargo's, which means I have more stuff. I always have a pocket organizer in the left cargo pocket which has a Vic Tinker, a Fenix L1T and a small FAK (and maybe a few other things). Then I may also clip other/bigger lights/knives etc in/to various pockets. Possible combos could include SF L1 + ZT0200, SRKW Vex + SF L1, Leek + Quark AA-T.

So going to work I always have a small light on my keychain. Not working I have the keychain light and a second light in a pocket organizer kit (if I'm "travelling light") with the option of a third light in/clipped to a pocket. Just as a coincidence I always tend to carry one knife per light.

This is what I normally EDC every work day. Weekends I only carry the keys and the RRT-0 clipped on my jeans.

My EDC

EDCJan2010.jpg

Whatever my current 2x123 main EDC light happens to be (Quark right now) it goes in my left front pocket next to the pepper spray. They keep one another upright in the pocket.

I guess I'm simple-minded, with the light just clipped to the inside of a pocket. Carried on the belt till I lost a light that way.

My Wife and I each have two sets of keys ... Each set of keys has a small torch attatched that is shaped like a bullet and uses four LR41 button cells ... They are very bright for their size and the batteries seem to last for almost ever ... They also came with a spare set of batteries ... Even though these little torches come into contact with keys, coins and other stuff, they seem to be very scratch resistant ... They were also cheap.

I also always carry a single AA Trustfire F20 five mode, in my inside pocket as it has a clip ... In the warmer weather, it just gets put in a trouser pocket deep down ... This is a great little torch and also cheap.
.

I go with the modular keys approach, too, and keep the car keys on a separate key ring from the other keys + useful stuff key ring. Everything lives in a pocket if at all possible (I've gotten into many arguments with parents and later my spouse about how much one can reasonably carry in one one's pockets). If necessary, I wear a sportcoat to give myself more pocket space. (I work a desk job, so I can't obviously carry lots of gear. A surprising selection of stuff lives in my briefcase, though. 🙂 )
