But how bright are they? I don't really know how to read the data sheet too well, but it looks like they put out 450 or 600 mcd, depending on exactly what shade of red they are. I think this is less than 1/10 of Nichia brightness. Is that correct?

LED brightness is dependent a great deal on its viewing angle, regardless of what the chip is made out of.
Wider viewing angles always give lower mcd values, regardless of LED type.

You're right, the mcd ratings are light density and not lumens. I keep getting hung up on that. On the data sheet I read about 40 degrees width at the half power points.

When I look at my Arc AAA beam width, it seems to be about the same order of magnitude. It seems to me the angles of the two LEDs are about the same.

Aren't these the Lumileds spiders that are used in truck tail lights and are super bright like on Craig's site? Are these the real deal craig? I think they take like 50-80ma too right?

i wound up with some from a ebay deal.the whites are 80+degree viewing angle.i think all the spiders are wide.
