I love my old BB 400's and Madmax lites. I have replaced one of the BB's old emitter with a quality Lux3...VERY nice!

But, I have a cheapie light with the SSC, and am very impressed.

Has anyone replaced the emitter on a sandwich with the SSC? Was it difficult? I am not even sure it would fit properly.

Also, which Mini-mag sized reflector might work well with the SSC? I prefer a somewhat floody beam, weighted toward center.

Thanks,
Bob

Yes, it is possible. You have to fold the legs flat against the sides of the LED in order for it to fit between the posts of the sandwich. The bottom has to be isolated somehow or it will short the anode of the LED to the copper on top of the sandwich.

You can use thinned down nail polish or a thin coat of AA glue on the slug before glueing it down.

I make a few sandwiches still once in a while, but, the additional steps to isolate the slug and the tight fit between posts make the assembly even longer and more difficult than the Luxeon.

Once you bend the legs over you need to dry fit it on top of the sandwich and ensure the LED will sit all the way down so the slug is flush with the top of the board. I have found it will bind more often than not and require some tweeking or removing of solder from the posts to get the LED to go all the way down.
