Starting A New Job, Flashlight Selection Assistance Requested

Thanks for that thorough post & advice, I appreciate it.
I'm just about to pull the trigger on the TK20 Yellow and a couple of E01's.
Then I'm also thinking about that MD20...

I'll have to do more research, to better understand li-ion cells too.

Also what is meant by: UI, and a^2 with the tactical UI?

Sorry if those are dumb-*** questions, but this "REAL FLASHLIGHT" solutions stuff is all new to me.

I always though a Mag-Lite was the "cream of the crop"... Boy was I MISTAKING! :faint: LOL...

Thanks again,
Ben

I used maglights for years. I wish all the lights available now were available back then... 🙂 There is a great thread here somewhere about li-ion care and usage. ill see if i can find it.

By buying the Md2 with the 2 mode ring and the M60 module, you save 7 dollars over buying them separately. I am sure that Gene Malkoff wouldn't mind substituting a M60WLF (or whatever M60 you want) for the normal M60. He does his own customer service and owns the company, so I doubt he is limited by any "no substitutions" policy. From my dealings with him, he is very reasonable and even generous when it comes to customer service things like this.

Thanks again Lights & Mjolnir.

I still haven't heard back from Malkoff yet though.
I just don't want to get shut-out of that light.

Maybe I should just order it, and make a note in the "Comments" section of the Order, again requesting the M60WLF???
I would HOPE that he'll read the Comment section.

Crap, now I see that there are no more MD2 EMS Orange units left. I wonder when the next run will be.
Too bad my e-mail hasn't been answered yet. Oh well...
Anyone have any other suggestions on an equal or more suitable brightly colored lighting solution?
I guess I could always get the WLF and use a different Host for it too...

If you are goign to go with the WLF, you shouldn't have any problems running it in the surefire G2 in a bright color. Im not sure if they are still made, but they were made in yellow at one point. The L level malkoff dropins should do fine in that light, although the high output models would have thermal issues in a plastic light.

Thanks Lights!

I ordered a TK20 Yellow and 2 Gold E01's a little while ago.

Now I just end to figure out the Malkoff Orange situation, or order a different one.

That's strange that he hasn't responded... He usually responds to my emails very quickly; sometimes only a few hours after I send him one.

You could always call the phone number on his site and talk to him directly if you want.

A 6P is a surefire model that uses P60 dropins that are now pretty much the closest thing to truly interchangeable light modules. The Malkoff M60 modules are more or less P60's; they were originally made to replace the stock surefire dropins. However, Malkoff now makes his own lights, but they are machined so the heads will only fit the specific dimensions of the M60 modules, and not other P60 modules. However, this isn't all that much of an issue, since there is a malkoff module for virtually everything you could want. Of course, they are more expensive than others. Dealextreme.com a lot of low quality and very cheap P60 modules, but they tend to have unnecessary modes and very bad beam quality.
The Solarforce L2 is also a P60 "host," and it is essentially a 6P clone. The 6P can't actually fit 1 18650 (the tube is too narrow), since it is designed for 2 CR123s (a 17670 will actually fit though). The Malkoff hosts were designed with the use of 1 18650 module in mind, so they have a slightly wider tube. Surefire doesn't like to make their lights lithium ion compatible for some reason, although they do have Lithium ion packs on some of their large (and incredibly expensive) HID lights, like the Beast II.
There is a list of P60 hosts around on the forums somewhere; it shouldn't be too hard to find. Of course, it isn't really an official standard, so some modules don't fit well in certain lights.
There are also incandescent P60 modules (the original P60 was incandescent).

The surefire G series, P series, C series, Z series, M2, and some of their weaponlights also take P60 modules. However, none of them can fit 18650s without being bored.

Man...I wish I had not read about this light...
Now I have to get one...

Can I charge it to you:thinking:

Ben take a look at the 5.11 Tactical Light for Life, Rechargeable Ultracapacitor Duty Flashlight it might be a good fit for you especially going from job to job during the day runs for 90mins after a 90 sec charge in the car. you could keep a backup in your pocket if it ran dead but in 90 secs the light is ready to go again. See it here http://www.officerstore.com/store/p..._rechargeable_ultracapacitor_duty_flashlight/:thumbsup:

I've read extensive reviews on this light, and in my opinion, it may be a bit before its time. The self discharge rate of this light is VERY high. So the only use profile that works for this light is for it to be on the charger all the time, or at least charged up fully before each use, then you've got maybe 30 minutes of light. If that use profile works for you, then you won't be disappointed.

Although it's not overly heavy, it is about the size of a 2D/3D Mag.

I really like the looks & features of the MD2 EMS Orange too.
Although I've been reading that some folks have concerns about the coating causing issues, possibly with the heat-sinking of the light. Yet others say that it should actually ADD to it.

If I can get by my "fear" of using 18650's and/or CR123's 😱 😱, I'll have to call Gene when he gets more built, and I'll most likely order one. 🙂

It is a forward clicky switch, so you press the switch partially for momentary on. If you press the switch down all the way, it will click, and the light will remain on.
In other words, it has both.

Thank you. From everything I've heard, Malkoff products are the best and I can't wait to get mine.

Well, I'm 2 weeks into my new job, Residential Equipment Systems Specialist (I know, THAT'S a mouthful! LOL...) aka: RESS for a large oil company.

So I have to go into folks' basements, attics, etc. to look at their HVAC equipment and see if it needs to be replaced.

I had been using a 2 x AA MniMag and it was OK, but man, some of these places are TOTALLY unlit (not to mention EXTREMELY FILTHY!!!).

To make a long story short , I received my Fenix TK20 Yellow & 2 EO1's on Thursday.

I also received my MH-C9000 & some other goodies on Thursday from a different supplier, and I'm looking forward to putting them to good use starting on Monday. 🙂 :twothumbs

Next will probably be a Malkoff MD2 EMS Orange w/M60-WLF that we've been talking about.

Thanks again everyone, you have been a GREAT help to me!!! 😀

Hey BigBen, might be a bit late to the show but I've got a bit of advice for the type of work you are doing. Take it from somebody who has been in your position doing that same thing. You need a light with both a high lumen output and a low. When close up, the high brightness will blind you, especially when examining household appliances and reading signs and tags. Becareful with lithium batteries, make sure you read up on how to use them properly without blowing you and your flashlight up. Good luck with your job and your new light.

Am sure everyone here is glad to be of assistance, let us know how the light works out, on the job experiences with the light etc.
