Starting A New Job, Flashlight Selection Assistance Requested

Thanks again, you folks are AWESOME!

Yup, I've been doing a lot of reading-up on the Lithium cells too.
I'm still a little concerned about using them, so I'm still trying to get by my "fear factor" and buy some...
I'm 50, and I'll "man-up" eventually! :grin2:

I figured that the EO1 should be decent for up-close work (ie: reading boiler & a/c labels, specs, tags, etc.), the TK20 should be good for lighting up a much larger area around the room, and the Malkoff (if/when I get it) should be good to light-up the entire basement/attic etc..

Don't worry too much about lithium ions, i had that same concern but then i realised that as with all things, just exercise some care and you should be fine. I've occasionally fallen asleep and left cells in the charger overnight but (thankfully) with no mishaps so far.

Think you'll be surprised at the TK20, i know i was. I've just surfed over to shiningbeam and saw that they have a number of warm white LED lights for sale there, however, these use 18650 cells (which you can purchase from AW's sales thread in the marketplace along with a charger) but if you look at the runtime graph, i am assuming that it runs on high for 120 minutes, which is pretty respectable.

watch your wallet 😀

A Healthy And A Happy New Year To All Of You!!!

OK, I've been at the new job for 3 weeks now, and here are my initial thoughts.

I've been using my new Fenix TK20 with just a pair of Alkaline's, and a little no-name key-chain light that I got in the mail, as a back-up.
I haven't tried the Duraloops in the TK20 yet, but I bought a bunch from Costco a few weeks ago.

So far, that TK20 is a killer tool!!!
The Natural Colors really come out of hiding with this light!
It practically lights-up an entire basement, so I can see the equipment.
It sure does do it's job 100%, however IMHO the hot-spot might be a bit too much for what I need.
There is a big difference between the Hot-Spot as compared to the Spill (even on Low), BUT I still love the light.

As someone stated earlier though, it might be a little too bright for close-up work, like reading labels etc., and it is.

I haven't started using my EO1's yet though. I'll beak one of 'em out starting on Monday.

I might also pick-up one (or more 😀) of those "Warm White LED Lights" that HyperLoop mentioned above, just to have it.

I still think I need a Flood, in order to light-up more of the areas that I've been going in to, so I think that Malkoff MD2 w/M60-WLF might be the answer, in ADDITION-To the TK20.

Would that Malkoff solution also be decent for close-up work though???

Thanks again fellas & gals,
BigBen

Ive been using the Fenix LD10 for awhile. Has a holster and different power settings, and uses only one AA battery. Very bright when set at its max 120 lumens. On my belt I hardly know its there.

I use my Malkoff M60LF or my M60LLF(semi-custom) on "lo" to read a book at night & it's PERFECT! It lights up an average size book with the flashlight about 18" away. So you can see that would translate really well to close up inspection stuff. Plus since there is ZERO hotspot, you don't get that blinding effect in the center.

The Malkoff would work but you can get a headlamp Zebralight H501W (warm tint) for close up work, 3 modes, uses 1xAA and leaves both hands free 😀

Hi FroggyTaco,
Thanks for that info.
Is there a place where I can see (maybe beam-shots?), learn, and understand the differences between the M60WLF, M60LF, and the M60LLF???

Hi HyperLoop,
Thanks for that suggestion.
I agree with the headlamp 100%, but being that I make my sales calls in business casual attire, and at the risk of sounding vein (which I'm really not), it wouldn't look proper and I'd feel kind of awkward.
Although I DO use headlamps for Striped Bass fishing on the beach! :twothumbs

Thanks Again,
Ben

A Zebra light is a different animal than what you see in your head when you hear the word "headlamp".

It is basically a right angle light with a clip on it. You can clip it to your belt, you can clip it to the neck on your shirt, you can clip it to your sleeve, you can clip it between the buttons on your shirt.

Do a little search on them here to see pictures.

the zebralights are VERY versatile. using 1xAA it is so incredibly small and u can just leave it in a pocket and never even notice its there. trust me on this 😀

UPDATE:

Just about 4 weeks at the new job, and that 'lil TK20 is still kickin' butt, even with 2 Alkaline Cells and on LOW! :twothumbs
I mean this thing lights up almost an entire basement (naturally depending upon the size of the room).

When I put the rechargeable AA's in there, will I see an even BETTER result?

I'm looking forward to my next few lighting solutions purchases!

Thanks again for everyone's help!

BigBen

great to hear that !!!

reason why i prefer rechargeable NiMHs like eneloops is because they dont leak

Alkalines can leak and spoil your whole light

output wise i dont think u will notice any difference sir.

bottom line: better to use rechargeables that dont leak vs alkalines that MAY leak

Mag AA incandescent

1. Used mainly to check wiring as color is very important here.

Ha ha, I always think of the scene in the Abyss when Bud has to cut the wires on the nuclear warhead to diffuse it using a yellow-green glowstick. Of course he can't tell which wire is which between a blue with a white stripe and black with a yellow stripe!

Or instead of a Maglite, you could go whole-hog and get a Surefire Aviator $200, or a McGizmo Sundrop $400.

With the NW TK20, he doesn't need an incan any more!
