Anyone know what a stock mag led can take as far as votage goes? I bought a stock 2D magLED and I was wondering if I could use the led in another maglite with more power? I want to ask here before I ruin the LED module...I happen to have a maglite with a 12.5V battery pack...but I was pretty sure it would blow the led module...

I wouldn't imagine a 2 cell module will last very long in a 3 or 4 cell Maglite... And it will probably only last about .0001 seconds on 12V.

This is a bit unscientific, but my 2 cell Mag LED PR drop in ran fine at ~3.7V for several recharges. The output at this supply voltage was just barely above the 3 AA MiniMagLED. The light failed at 4.3V (with output about 20% above the 3AA MimiMagLED) with less than 1 hour total run time at this voltage. It was a LED failure, which appeared to be temperature related. YMMV.

I now have a 3 cell version Mag LED PR drop in, and it is running happily on one 14500 li-ion cell after a dozen cycles now. I also have been running a 2 AA MiniMag LED on one li-ion cell, also for about a dozen cycles, with no problems yet.

I wouldn't go anything past 4 volts, you might kill the LED PR drop in

Thats exactly what I was scared of and thought...Ok so its a no go then, I will just wait and try to buy the right LED upgrade when I have the money...Thanks guys!

Hey Cutlerylover,

You might allready know this, but if you're gonna get another LED-dropin for your Mag, I think the best solution is the TerraLUX Ministar 5 SSC P4. It's apparently rated up to 24V, but the warranty covers only up to 9,0V. Check it out if you allready haven't. And there is a 2D version on it's way, in about a month.

That is gonna be one nice drop-in, probably the best out-there. I am thinking about picking one up for my 4D, right now it just collects dust on my shelf....
