The reason is simple. A Stylus 2 has 2x 1.5 volt cells that can give a total of 3 volts. A white (or blue/true-green) led wants 3.6 volts so 2 cells just isn`t enough to drive one at anywhere near its full power. It will shine but very dimly. The red and yellow leds you find in S-2s only want about 2 to 2.2 volts so the 2 cells give more than enough to light them at a decent level. The stylus 3 has 3 cells so the 4.5 volts they give will more than adequately drive a white led.
The design of the Stylusses looks a little skinny to put any sort of inverter setup in there to boost the voltage, and it would add to the length anyway if it could be done, so I personally don`t expect to ever see a white, blue, etc Stylus 2. Anyone know any differently?
