Streamlight XT HP -- brighter alternatives?

I had a streamlight Stinger XT but sold it to get the XT HP. I was expecting a dramatic increase in power. Well, as far as I can tell, it doesn't seem all that much brighter.

What are some good, rechargeable flashlights, which will be extremely powerful -- or at least more powerful than the Stinger XT HP?

I have considered some hand held spotlights but don't want something heavier to carry than a large sized Maglite.

I go for walks near the edge of the woods with my dog. We have a fair number of wild animals, and in this case it includes skunks and possums which seem to be getting pretty bold. I want to both see what's coming as well as have such blindingly bright light to hopefully momentarily stop what's coming out of the bushes.

The normal Stinger has about 9500-10000 lux throw and about 110 lumen output, i'm not sire about the XT version.

Pelican 7060(review, 130 lumen), more throw and more output in a cradle charger. If you don't mind not using a cradle charger, the Tiablo A8 Q5(review of the normal A8, the Q5 version is brighter, Normal 17000 lux on high, Q5 is probably around 20000 Lux) or A9(review, 20000lux on high) will have even more throw(Up to 200M) and a smaller size. The new Dereelight DBS also looks good.

I'm more of an LED guy so no Incan suggestions from me.

:welcome:

Hmmmm... just a quick reply, if you add the aftermarket TerraLux TLE-100 to a 'Magcharger' you could expect the ease of a cradle charged flashlight with the output of around 200 Lumen @ 4~6 hours!

Well, the previous one was only about 65 lumen. I'd guess the new one to be at the most, 200 lumen at the emitter. It should be a good drop-in but if you already have a 2-4D mag, It might be better to buy a Malkoffdevices drop-in when hey are available because that will give more output and throw. But the Tiablo A8/A9 Q5 will out throw the Malkoffdrop-in.

If you have only seen 5MM leds, you know, the ones used in cheap multi LED lights, then the newer LEDs(Cree XR-E, Seoul P4, Rebel 100) will blow you away. They are at least 180 lumens at around 4 watts power.

All of the above recommended LED lights should out throw and out muscle the Stinger. How about buying a relatively cheap WF-400 and some 18650 Li-ion 3.7v batteries and charger(total about $40) to check out the newer LEDs.

Or you might want to build a ROP mod, 600+ lumens out the front and it will kill your Stinger in output. Check this thread.

The WF-500 is also a pretty good incan for the money. Reports say around 300 lumen and 14000 Lux throw.

It isn't.

You might want to try the Streamlight Ultra-Stinger. It is a bit longer and weighs an ounce or two more than the Stinger, but still pretty light for a light that puts out the level of light that it does.

Since you already have the Stinger, the only thing that you would have to get is the UltraStinger itself, since all of the Stinger series uses the same charger.

I can second the ultrafire WF 500. I just recently got one, and it's just great. Tremendous side spill...very bright and you can see 400 feet- no problem ( dark night). You can also add the led drop in for this light- just got mine...it's also great. Not as powerful as the incan, but darn good. You could throw it at a skunk...not so expensive a light you'd worry about breaking it. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1317

The slight dis advantage is that you must use UNprotected 18650 batteries.

Protected ones won't fire the bulb!

Also consider one of the new Q2 Ultrafires this 400 for example http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.6937

I appreciate everyone's input.

Couple more questions.

Would the Ultra Stinger be brighter than the SL-20X?
Also, I am trying to get a very pin point precise concentrated pre-focused with no side spill or halo effect. Can I get that in either of these lights?
Also open to other rechargeable incans if I can get the super powerful, concentrated beam I want. I am so new to this that I don't know most of the models which have been mentioned with other brands.

Do you know the number? I am so new to this I don't know the company or who Mike is.

PTS = pacific tactical solutions. I think Mike is the head there.

The Ultrastinger should be brighter and throw much further then the Stinger.

Why don't you want side spill. From my experience, side spill is quite useful and allows you to see what is around you, not just what the hotspot is on. And most incan light will have side spill. The most common no side spill lights are high power LED lights with optics.

The spot on the UltraStinger is noticably brighter than the spot from my SL20's, though both use a 6V10W bulb. The spill is about the same from both, but the spill from the UltraStinger seems to be less because of the brighter spot. The runtime on the UltraStinger is a little less though since it uses a lower capacity battery. Not sure why you don't want spill as all of the lights that Streamlight makes for law enforcement use have pretty decent spill so that one doesn't trip when chasing bad guys. :)

Thank you . Good question. I may be just incorrect in assuming that the light from the side spill, would make the concentrated light brighter if all that side light was put into the focused beam.

Is this a super simple drop in replacement for the lamp in the MagCharger?
Any idea of the market price on the TLE-100?

The new Cree drop-in(Unknown bin, so efficiency and actual lumens is unknown) is available here. The Drop-in is dimmer then the original light but also runs for longer. It is should be simple to install.

I think there are better options out there but that's just my opinion.

I have personally tested 100 or so lights.

This includes back to back : ALL the stingers, mags and tigerlights. Not 1 of them is impressive ( to me) after left on for 5-10 mins.ALL dim fast..all yellow fast.

I dont like one of them.

A L L stock and modified/hybrid type lights dim and get yellow FAST.
(the A2 is a different story..yet I dont care for that light for many reasons)
Sure the Mag 65/85 and similar are bright..but these lights have issues and I would never trust my life to them.ALL dim /yellow fast.

In general all decent LED lights last much much much longer and dont change from white(ish) to yellow/brown...nor do they lose 10-50% brightness in just a few mins.Nor do bulbs constantly blow.

Asking if a XP is better then a XR or whatever..is like asking if a 67 dodge is better then the 70 model...most likely yes..BUT why not get a car from 2007?

I.M.O. all these mags, stingers, tigers are OLD school lights. We just have much better stuff these days.

Think of these lights as 8track tapes or a steam engine or corded phones...or Attari 2600 ( for those old enough here to even know what that is..heh)

You can get "better" old school lights from PTS.Lith batts alone make a night and day difference in run time and delay yellow/dimming.

I.M.O. MY take on mags/tigers/stingers/similar
Good/great years ago...now just relics.

****DISCLAIMER****
These are all MY thoughts
I am not here to offend any brand or type of light loyals.
I.M.O. =In MY Oppinion
I call it how I see it, and base my content on testing of 100+ lights.

In summary : Get a modern High-tech LED light ( I.E. Wolf Eyes, Deree, and others you can read about here)

**1 more tip..When you want a new light, dont ask the guy that owns and has tested 1 or 2....ask the guys here that own/have owned/tested 100+
and can speak with more heft..due to actually using said lights daily

My 2 cents

FASTCAR -- I am willing to keep an open mind.
What do you think is a good Modern alternative??
Do you have a favorite LED in the $100.00-$125.00 range?
Or do you like something totally different.

I want to hear more.

A few years back my favorite thrower was a SuperStinger with the seperate HP head added. The HP head was 100% LOP and cast a mean beam. My two Super Singers were stolen but I still have the LOP turboheads. Have been looking for a Super Stinger ever since, and with some of the high amperage battery packs available for the Ultra Stinger you can get get good runtime.

Well MTHall51, consider this.

The Stinger outputs around 110 lumens and 9000 Lux at 1meter with fresh batteries.

The newer generation can produce at least 180 lumen and up to 250 lumen at 3.5-3.7v at 1 amp, depending on bin code. If driven to 1.5 amp, the Cree Q4, Q5 and Rebel 100 will easily hit 300 lumens. The more common newer LEDs are the Cree XR-E series, available bin code in order of brightness least to most, P3, P4, Q2, Q3, Q4 ,Q5. Seoul P4, U bin. and Rebel 80 and Rebel 100.

This $28 light produces 100-120 lumen and 14000 Lux at 1m throw, similar performance to you stinger with better throw(numbers form here). With 2 CR123 batteries, it runs for 1.5 hours to about 60% output and with a 18650 battery runs for 2.5-3 hours to 75% output. Of course, quality is only average.

According to this review, the Tiablo A9 has more then double the throw of you Stinger. 19000 Lux at 1m with 2 CR123 batteries and around 130-180 lumens. It runs for 1.5 hours before dimming. According to many, it has really good quality and it uses T7075 aluminum, better then the 6061. Search it up.

I'm guessing Fastcar would recommend the DereeLight CL1H (Was I right in my guess?). I has around the same or a bit more output then the Stinger.

The newer LED have very respectable performances when compared to many incans of the same size. The 1 AA powered Fenix L1D-CE has 60 lumens, the 2AA L2D-CE has 120 lumen output(Rebel 100 versions are brighter). All this from the common AA battery.

Note that I don't own the above mentioned lights, all the numbers are from reviews, beam shots, and many other sources.

Now I shall attempt to sleep:poof:.

Any idea if the WF-500 has a pretty concentrated beam with a large hot spot? I am aiming for minimal side spill.
