Hmmmm... if you didn't mention you were going to torture a helpless rat with it, I might have told you everything you needed to know about the LED, including where to buy it.

I'm sure my little friend Veemon here would be ashamed of you too.

An appeal to ones who know since I don't...

I am a researcher in visual neuroscience, and I would like to present a strobing light source to a rat. As I would like to be able to control the parameters of the flickering light (frequency, duration) I intend to control the LED with a DIO card.

The requirements for this LED are at least the following...

1. It can be turned on/off at 100 Hz
2. Its onset and offset times should be very rapid
3. The emitted light should be a white light, with low heat output
4. It has a long life (turning it on and off many thousands of times)
5. The emitted light should be uniform, not producing "rings".
6. Surface LED Construction/ Flat lens/ not bipolar

Can anyone point me to the appropriate product/manufacturer? Also, any other considerations which I am not aware of would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Marshall

Regarding your requirements: any white LED that is not overdriven will work. LEDs are often used in opto-electronic coupling devices. In fact, I believe a rapidly toggled LED can be modulated (like a laser) at extremely high rates to transmit data, so the transitions must be pretty steep.

redleader,
can I ask what the purpose of the experiment is, and how you'll run it ?

Is the animal going to enjoy the experiment ?

It seems that a large Majority of CPF members don't like the idea of animal testing, perhaps still more so if any suffering is experienced.

My personal beliefs are very inclined to *Peace and Love*, and although I want scientific R+D to progress, I don't like the idea of animals being put through *unpleasantness*.

I say blind all the rats you want, just make sure you give them little pairs of sunglasses and tiny little canes so they can get around when your done.

Not enough info.

What do you mean by "flat lens"?

Do you mean you want surface mount?

What size do you need?

How bright do you need?

How many degrees beam width?

What color(s)?

What mounting?

What kind of current is your DIO card capable of?

What are the limits of frequency and pulse width?

What kind of power supplies do you have available?

What kind of software will you be using to control this?

Can you write software that uses an accurate real-time clock in the computer?

What is acceptable jitter for pulse width and period?

I think that it is fair to say that _most_ common LEDs will meet your frequency specifications, and will be very easy to drive with a DIO card; simply connect the LED from the output of the DIO card to a 5 volt supply through a suitable current limiting resistor.

About the only problem that you will have is that _some_ white LEDs use a blue or UV LED chip combined with a phosphor layer to produce the white...this phosphor layer may introduce a time delay and limit your frequency response.

Funny you posted that link.
It eventually lead me to a very large animal adoption list, where I then discovered the Seattle Humane Society has a pair of rats that need a home. And they're going to get one.

That's good! I'd think you're more likely to entertain them with a Sauce LightWand, rather than assaulting them with strobes.

redleader, are you there ??

Telephony,
Congratulations on your 2 new additions. Please post pics of the family once they're settled. And remember, only enough light to illuminate the food/water dish and exercise wheel....Hey, what're you doing....put that M6 down...JK.

Any of you fellow flaholic animal lovers find yourself in Orlando be sure to let me know. Funny how you can consider folks you've not met friends.

A great weekend to you all.

Most pet rats are too smart to run around on those "excersize wheels" (usually dumb stupid hampsters use them
smile.gif
) so I just let them run aro5und the house. Once they've been **** and s**t trained, they can pretty much roam free and you'll never find an "unwanted surprise" in your vacume cleaner.

Out of 12+ years of having rats as pets, I've only had one that shat everywhere and couldn't be trained to the the litterbox and that's becuse he was a Humane Society rescue and its previous owners terribly abused it so that every time he saw or even heared a person in the room or heard a tollet flush or some appliance turn on he pooped and peed automatically.
frown.gif

The pair of boy rats I'm gettintg next week are also humane society rescues, but they were not mistreated in any manner. They are gay though
blush.gif
and will beat the crap out of any female rats they encounter. :-O

The adoption is contingent on that both of the little guys have to be adopted out together and live together in the same cage, and that they can't be "used" for snake food. ICK!!! WHO COULD DO SUCH A THING?!?!?!?

So I ventured out in my wheelchair in 30 degree temps and a fair amount of cold, cold wind; and ended up at three different pet stores before getting what I needed: extra food for squeaky mouses & rats, some Carefresh litter, another drinking bottle, and another cage top. So I'll be ready when the Humane Society comes-a-nocking.
grin.gif

And I swear to U, that no strobe lights or PWM LEDs will be anywhere near the Humane Society's home placement crew.

Properly trained, rats can run around the house as much as they want, and then automatically go back to their cage when they need to "go". Think of having a little baby housetrained puppy, but about 3x to 4x as small.

P.S.

I'll post pictures when I am able.

My digital camera finally cashed it in, and it no longer recognises the connection to a computer, though it does still take pictures and display them on its built-in LCD scrren
