My buddy that I went through paramedic with just got hired on a full time department. I want to get him a flashlight as a gift. I don't want something that he'd bring to the fireground in his turnout gear but rather a gift light... to commemorate the event.

I'm thinking something like a Fenix L0D with custom engraving would be nice. The wife liked that idea but we're open for suggestions.

Definitely want a nice looking, bright led flashlight, though.

Thanks!

Sorry, I forgot the budget. Under $100. He's not a flashlight guy so anything big or that uses non standard batteries might end up in a drawer.

Feel free to give reasoning with suggestions.

Like I was thinking the L0D because it's small and can be carried with his keys easily. The custom engraving will remind him of getting hired FT and us :D. Also it's bright enough to wow and possibly win a convert.

First of a congrats on completing the paramedic; it's a very grueling and demanding program. I might suggest two lights; first a headlight such as the PT EOS and something small with adjustable light such as the Photon Freedom. I have found the headlamp to be invaluable for IVs in dark surroundings and the adjustable level Photon has served in a pinch for pupil checks when my "standard issue" incandescent penlight has failed.

Thanks for the suggestions I don't know about all the brands so I'll have to search for reviews on them.

We've been paramedics for 3 years but since he had no prior FF experience or certs it takes a lot of testing to get hired on a department. He's going through FFII academy right now and when he's done there's a party! BTW, it doesn't seem as grueling when you go though with a buddy and study while playing Halo2...

I like both lights they look to be well reviewed and functional. I don't think they'd work well as presentation gifts though. I'm afraid the Photon looks too much like the cheap DX keychain lights even though it's not. And I don't know that he'd use the headlamp. I've always just used a Garraty lifelight disposable on my helmet because of heat, water, debris and general abuse the 2nd most popular helmet choice is a pelican.

That's why I don't want to provide him with the typical FF flashlights because they're not good commemorative gifts either. Bright yellow and rubberized is practical for work but not what I would consider best to mark the occasion.

Thanks for the suggestions, please keep them coming.

something with good throw perhaps....if he's gonna be using the flashlight on duty..to cut through smoke?

Get him a double AA Fenix. I think FenixStore.com also engraves?

Would a L1D CE Q5 Fenix be a good choice on a keyring or is it too large? I'm trying to think if he'd wear it as an EDC if it didn't...

A new fenix E01. The problem with 99% of lights out there that flashaholics will consider is they use too much power- put a AAA alkaline in an l0d and you'll get rubbish runtimes. However, the E01 can use even "heavy duty" type batteries with little loss of performance. Fenix-store can engrave it for you.

p.s: I love how everyone has managed to read the fact that he WONT be using it for work :banghead:

Hello guys, there's more to a thread than the title? (though those who should read this, won't...)

I'm excited about the E01 but I don't think $15 is enough to spend on a gift. I think we've decided to get the L0Dx2 (one for my buddy and one for my wife ~who's graduating college in may) in red custom engraved from the Fenix Store. I'll get an E01 for myself :D

I just know when my wife sees the custom engraved L0D for my buddy she's gonna want one for herself. Now, how to keep her from opening my packages...

Thanks for the replies :D

One of my best friends is a Fire Captain. I have given him flashlights as Christmas gifts. One year I gave him a Surefire E1L. He uses this light as an EDC when on duty. Last year, I gave him a Fenix L2D CE. He carries this light in his personal truck.

"When seconds count, count on fire fighters."

A Fenix or Olight should be good(current gen LED of course). Common batteries, multimode, good quality, and not too big.
