Curiously I bought one on ebay and I am not sure why. Does anyone have one they have modded with mostly drop in/screw on parts?

I might as well have some fun with it. :twothumbs

Any suggestions appreciated...I know it needs a new tailcap switch right out of the package.

I did buy a Cree lamp Q5 but I think it might decrease the runtime? I am really new at this any help appreciated

Congrats on your 6P purchase. There is a lot you can do with your 6P. You could use Lumens Factory LA's, Malkoff LA's, ebay LA's, and LA's from a dozen other sites online.

You could use the extender (A19) and have essentially a 9P. You can go the rechargeable route and have "guilt free lumens". Other member's will chime in with another million idea's you could do to your 6P.

Im just curious on one thing, why do you feel the need to change the tailcap right out of the package? Unless you want the strobe function the tailcap will not fail you if its a twisty.

Thanks for the welcome I guess I thought it would be better to go with a clicky switch to prevent accidental on....I have had a D2 for years before I got bit by the bug, I used it for bouncing part time. You just click it and the light comes on....like I said I have a lot to learn. I didnt even expect to buy the light or I would have bought the LED version...I just had an impulse moment and wanted another project besides my maglites

Twisty switches won't accidentally activate, or not in my experience.

Anyhow. I reccommend researching a bit before you choose something to modify about it. Post some beamshots, if you don't mind!

Oh, and welcome to CPF. You're one of us now, no turning back!

The tailcap should be fine its the surefire click-on tailcaps that have the issue. I prefer the monentary click-on so I went with a Leef and I see no need to ever change, they are very nice and have a good rep. here's where to find them http://www.lighthound.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2638

The amount of drop-in's available is so large there is a sticky just for them but the best and hardest to get is the malkoff.

Here is a picture of my 6P:

I got myself a stainless steel head/bezel with UCL lens, a Leef clicky tailcap, the Leefgrip, a Malkoff drop-in, and 2 rechargable 123's for it. It's insanely bright with the Malkoff, and looks real mean. I sanded the knurling with sandpaper to match the head to the body, gave the light a "pre-worn" look

Here is a beamshot of the stock P60L LED module that comes in the 6PL:

And here is the same light, with a Malkoff M60 drop-in module:

You chose a good base light. Look around and pay attention when somebody mentions SureFire "legos" (like the toys). The 6P is part of what is generally referred to on CPF as the "P" or "C" series of SureFire lights, and has a mind boggling amount of upgrade paths. Strauss' light is an excellent example of what you can do to your 6P to make it the perfect light for your unique use.

I can tell you why you bought it...
good deal
easily upgraded
small-ish form
surefire reliability and support
runs on both alkaline and recharge-ables

FYI... If you rotate the tail cap/switch ~1 full rotation it locks out completely. Tighten it back so the notches are in-line and it re-activates the momentary thumb switch.

I would like to control everything from the tailcap end unless I am switching modes like on my Fenix L2D. Does the Leef switch do that? :duh2: Does it fit exact?

The Leef switch is a simple on/off forward clicky. "Forward" meaning that you can press down on it for momentary on and it won't click. It's the opposite of your Fenix's switch. To make a multi-level light with the Leef switch you'd need a drop in that has multiple levels programed into it. There are no mods for the 6P that change levels by twisting the head like the Fenix.

The 6P is THE classic Surefire, and now that the L-series lights are hot, 6P prices are low. Physically just a little larger than the E2L that is my everyday 'at work' light, it feels nice in the hand.

A Z34 Lanyard is a nice addition, $13 from SF, often less on the BST section (mine cost $5 delivered).

My primary reason for a 6P purchase was to host the M60 Malkoff. I'd call the Malkoff a 'street sweeper', as it lights up everything ahead as well as both sides, out to nearly 300'. Nightime drivers give you wide berth with an M60.

I know it needs a new tailcap switch
Surefire's sold a bazillion lights with that switch, as it is bulletproof, but either the Z49 or the Z59 are a factory fit. Both those show up on BST, and you can sell your original equipment switch there as well. Give it a try first, after a week or so you'll know if you like it or not.

Many aftermarket switches too, with Leef getting high marks for performance & beautiful workmanship.

The Ultimate in newbie questions.....drum roll.....what is BST?

I use flashlights hard and my old mags will still get an upgrade. I never thought I would get into another occupation where I used them more than as a medic but I was wrong....

How do you get in line for the Malkov 60? I know they are very hard to get.

Also I never carry ONE flashlight, that is inviting trouble.....

Thanks so much guys my friend turned me onto this site and he was SO right about how nice everyone is

The Leef tailcap is a direct fit replacement for the Surefire 6P. It houses a McClicky which is known to be one of the best clicky switches out there. All of my Leef tailcaps work very well, and the build quality is top-notch
