Surefire 6pl vs 6p?

How does the actual output of the 6p led version compare to the output of it's incan brother? Similiar brightness? Or is one definitely a winner here? I'm curious because the run times are so drastically different. But i am an incan lover at heart; love their color rendition of objects at night...It's just that if the led version is truly just as bright as the 6p original then that runtime may cinch the deal for me. (I need to pick out a couple of Surefires as gifts.) Perhaps the G2 series of lights would even suffice...
Thanks.

The P60L is brighter than the P60 but I wouldn't even mess with it. Between the two I'd get the 6P and drop an Malkoff M60LL in it. The M60LL stomps the P60L and I say this as someone who owns both.

As far as the host goes the 6P is a great host, but the G2 is cheaper, lighter, and more ergonomic IMO. The new G2L should come with a metal head (which is subject to scarring) to dissipate the heat of the LED drop. Back to the original question, yes they are brighter, and you can find LEDs with a good color rendering index (CRI/warm tint) if that is what you like. The run time and efficiency brought me over to LEDs long ago though, so I have a biased opinion towards them. Good luck!

Just stick a Malkoff M60WL in your 6P. Problem solved.

Both brighter and has a longer runtime than the stock 6PL anyhow.

As another owner of the P60L & a M60L, the M60L is clearly the winner between the 2.

Go with SF 6P and Malkoff.

I have a G2L and a SF9z with Malkoff M60....the m60 blows away the sf p60l....i have my G2L to the wife.

Yet another + for 6PL/Malkoff M60W or M60WL here.

I got the M60 and I'm thrilled with it. Incan lovers definitely seem to love the W (warm tint) dropins.

With this particular flashlight model there's just very little sense (that I can see) in going incandescent unless you just HAVE to have that. Otherwise go LED because even after upgrading the head you still have an 80 lumen, long runtime backup!

I've got a P60 and P60L (and G2 host), and they're about the same brightness. The P60's spot is a bit brighter than the P60L's, but the P60L's spill is noticeably brighter than the P60's. By themselves, and ignoring the rest of the market (i.e., aftermarket drop-ins), I think the P60L is a great upgrade to the P60 for the average user.

If runtime is attracting you, though, definitely consider an LED module other than SureFire's. The Malkoff modules are great, though pricey. Could also go for Dereelight, or various others. In the end, as others have stated, your best option for what it sounds like you want over the P60 would be a Malkoff M60LL, M60L, or M60WL.

And if you're an incan lover, definitely don't bother with the P60L. Its color rendition is passable, but nowhere near what you get with an incandescant. I haven't gotten to try a warm LED yet (e.g., M60WL), but from everything I've read around here, they should give you a satisfying level of color rendition, while providing you with all the extra runtime you desire.

Another vote for a 6P and a 3rd-party drop-in. I've got one with a warm tint Dereelight drop-in and it has been great. A Malkoff M60W would be even better.

You could also get a Solarforce L2 as an inexpensive all-aluminum host and offset the cost of a good LED drop-in. It would be better for the purpose than a nitrolon-bodied G2, IMO.

I have both the L2 and the G2...I wanted to stick to the 6P and stay surefire, but when the L2 comes with an R2 LED, batts, and a charger, and it also can fit the 18650 battery you can't lose. Boring a 6P seemed like a bit of a chore. I love both of my lights but the G2 Nitrolon seems more indestructible IMO

+1. Surefire is great but Malkoff is a much better drop in. I have a Malkoff MD2 host with bezel switch which makes a nice simple 2 level light.

Oh, I wasn't actually referring to the G2's strength there. By all-aluminum, I was thinking about the nitrolon body's inability to act as a heat reservoir, or as a thermal contact for your hand so that your blood circulation can act as a heat pump if you need to run a high-current LED continuously.

+1 on the heat sinking part, I was just giving my impression of the overall quality of the flashlight in my hand. My G2 probably will never see more than 200 lumens unfortunately :( but the L2 has bigger plans. To the original question, if you want quality, spend a little less to get the 6p and drop an M60 in it. Getting the 6PL would impress you for a minute...then the flashaholism will take over and you will start buying drop-ins, so you will prolly never use the original P60L pill again.

Right on! Thanks for all the responses. My motivation behind this thread was actually which light would be better for a non flashaholic as a gift, you know a regular, normal person...:D.
But i never really paid attention to the drop-in mod stuff before, but thanks to you guys i finally realize what the fuss is regarding the Malkoff drop-ins using the 6p as a host. :grin2:

I might as well ask here...does Malkoff make a drop-in for the three cell 9p?? I always wanted an excuse to get one...(Jeez, i think i just jacked my own thread.)

The M60 will work in the 9P using 3 primaries. However, if you want to use rechargables, you will need 2x17500's.
