Surefire E2D - how does it stack up for defense? Something better?

First of all, greetings to fellow flashlight freaks - this is my first post. I'm probably not a fully qualified freak but I do own several Surefires (E2D, M2 Centurion, x300 weapon light) which I use often.

I have been traveling a bit lately by plane. At home, I carry concealed (pistol) but that's not an option traveling to different states here in the US. In a few weeks I'll be in San Francisco and doing a lot of walking at night, so I thought to pack my E2D, which is a "tactical" flashlight. My thought was that having the ability to disorient someone with light (followed by a swift escape) is better than being empty handed.

Anyway, that's the typical scenario for my "tactical" flashlight use - on the road, can't carry concealed.

I'm wondering if there are better options in the marketplace than my E2D? If there is a better grade of "tactical" flashlight, I wouldn't mind investing in one. The E2D does 200 lumens and has a striking top/bottom...not really sure those would be that useful. I do like the dual output, as it doubles as a handle normal-brightness flashlight.

A giant six-D-cell flashlight is not what I'm after - something that is pocket or belt-clippable.

If my E2D is as good as most lights in that market, then I won't worry - just asking for opinions as I'm just starting to look around.

Thanks all!

Talking about flashlights as weapons, even in a self-defense scenario, is frowned upon here.

I will asnwer the 'what are other tactical lights' question. What you do with that light is up to you.

The E2DL (which is what you have if it's 200lm) is a great light. Probably the best.

A bigger form is the surefire 6P defender. You can put a dropin that with provide you with many more lumen than stock.

You can also Lego that head onto the C3. With a M91 it's a great combo. (i have one)

For EDC, I consider the E2DL to be a very good choice. The short bezel-up clip isn't ideal, but if it works for you, then it's not a problem. I just installed the clip from my LX2 onto mine, since the LX2 is away getting bored, and I should like it even more.

Yes, the E2DL only has 200 lumens, while newer designs may have more. The TIR optic allows a person to put all of them exactly where they need to go.

I've got numerous 18650 sized lights and 6Ps, and prefer the slimness of the E2DL over all of them.

If you've got it and you like it, then use it with confidence. I doubt you'll find anything significantly better (for free).

The Surefire is a great light and you can't go wrong. You also might want to consider the Klarus XT11. It is a very popular light right now and has great value. Nice mix of throw and flood. Takes both a single 18650 or (2) cr123s.

Not only does it have a good deal more output than the Surefire, but also a unique dual button tail cap. It has a strobe only function button that is slightly lower than the main one, but still easily accesible in an emergency situation. The strobe button is instant on, which means no cycling through the different settings to get to the strobe. There are several nice reviews of it here on the forum.
