Hello fellow forumite,

Is there any plans for SureFire / Paul Kim to manufacture an emergency strobe light? Something like the Inova 24/7, but a superb SureFire version. The SureFire version doesn’t have to be multifunction, but it has be a premium strobe light. Any ideas?

I certainly haven't heard of such but perhaps others do know. Have you looked at the ACR FireFly?

Hello Slick228,
That sounds pretty good challenge, but as you know we are busy with current products production and I am afraid to report you that I do not have any such product in my near plan.
However, thank for your kind invitation to this thread.

Respectfully,
pk

Well As PK, has at this time, stated there are no such plans, my next suggestion to you would be the military SDU/5, SDU/2000, and SDU/E, in that order. I keep the SDU/5 on hand with an adapter that allows me to use the 123 batteries. You should be able to find everything on eBay. The SDU/2000 is the latest, and runs from AA bateries. They are also the most expensive.

Tek-Tite makes some strobes that look pretty good on paper (haven't tried one). One thing I don't understand, all these strobes flash continuously. I thought the international distress signal was three flashes, then wait one minute, then three flashes again. That would make batteries last a heck of a lot longer. Why don't any of these strobes have a mode like that?

Only a guess, but a strobe is designed to get attention. Most of the time you see a strobing light, it is a situation that requires some sort of attention from you. Therefore the 3 flashes is really unnecessary. I would further speculate that if trying to signal and aircraft travelling at 300mph, that a delay in signalling could mean that you get missed completely. This is the primary reason that the military strobes come with directional covers.

I think the 3 flashes thing is if you're lost on a mountain or something. It can be days before SAR is even looking for you. But they could start at any moment. And they know to look for a triple flash at 1 minute intervals because it's a standard. The last thing you want to do is leave your strobe on constantly and drain the batteries in just a few hours.

Hello Geoff,

I was browsing the site that your link for the MS2000 goes to and found a SOS light. It is interesting that they list it as producing 50000 cd and it is visible to 22 miles. If you do the math, that works out to 0.0000037 foot candles at 22 miles (0.00000034 lux at 35742 meters). This is not much light to illuminate something, but your eye can still see it. I guess eyes are pretty sensitive.

That MS2000 looks like a pretty good unit. I am going to see if I can find one over here.

Tom

When I was in the Navy, we used something similar to the MS2000. It's built like a tank, but the strobe is not the brightest out there. My PT strobe blows it away in brightness. Also, I didn't like the way it radiated light, alot of it is not visible from certain angles. It's a tough unit though.

Thank you for all of your responses! I reviewed the MS2000, but it doesn't fill the niche. I will continue to cross my fingers and hope for SureFire to produce an emergency strobe in the future.

I think it is a good idea to have all of your lights made by the same manufacturer, especially for tactical purposes. Any thoughts?
