Finally! I've been checking that thread forever, and can't believe it took this long. It was as everybody expected, but SF could have saved a bunch of ruffled feathers by stating the facts earlier. No, they didn't need to, but it would have been easy, and customer-effective to do so.
Done now though, so that's good.

That's all fine and dandy, IF he would have answered the question: Why was the price increase so dramatic? Restructuring a dealer/distributor network does not require a price increase, nor does the blatant (and I would say borderline illegal)price fixing, that sounds almost like a blackmail..."you better sell our lights at the specified price OR ELSE!!" How does a price increase allow a fair playing field for the dealer/distributor?
I said it a few years ago, Surefire is going to price themselves out of existance.

I think your thinking of a different situation. Saturn (the car company) would be the best example of a large company fixing prices at the dealership for years. You must be thinking of price fixing when some sort of fraud is involved to benefit. MAP is a commonly practiced policy by many companies to even out competition between dealers.

BuddTx and Dano make good points. The "Minimum Advertised Price" is a bit unusual. It appears to thwart "competition" to some degree. You probably won't see any bargain prices. Where are our "leagle beagles"? lol

I'm surprised SureFire makes as much money as they do. I bought an e2 this week and I'm a little disapointed. Its a nice light but not worth what I paid for it. Everyone says there "tactical lights". if these lights would actually be helpful in a situation like that is up to argument. but if they are I doubt the e2 would be bright enough. Also you would need to be a very skilled and trained person to make use of it. The beam is quite dispersed. I would rather have a tightly focused beam that I could shine in someones eyes or spot something in the distance. A lot of everyday people buy these lights. I'm not trying to anger anyone but for me they are just an over priced light that goobles up expensive batteries really fast and you can't leave them on for that long without them getting to hot. If I were to need anything brighter than an arc or photon I would carry the rage or inova x5. I must be the only one here who doesn't think the e2 is the best light in the world.

mrchri5, you are absolutely right,but the e2 does put out an amazing amount of light for it's size but that doesn't warrant such a high price.I didnt think that the construction of my e2 was that much better than (gasp!)a maglite.
One other company that has "minimum advertised prices" is Benchmade Knives. But my favorite knife dealer,cutlery shoppe, didn't raise their prices,instead they didn't print the prices in their catalog, they put a note in there that for the prices of B-made knives you would have to call. Why doesn't anybody do this with sure-fire?

You are missing a key element here, and that is the E in E2. It stands for "executive" and means these lights were NOT designed to be used in tactical situations. I sure hope you never considered using the E1 for anything remotely "tactical."
You have the "beginner" SF now. It is a great light, but if you want way MORE light, all's ya gotta do is write the check...

Put an M3 up agianst a Maglite. Makes the Mag look like a piece of 13 year old Yiddish Llama dung. Also, it is not hard at all to use a tailcap switched light in conjunction with a pistol. I suggest you try it of you have the means to, you might be suprised. Have you ever tried to blind someone using a Maglite?? You would have to keep moving the light to make sure that you had a bright area of the beam in their face instead of one of the rings of darkness (I think that the beam seems to look like a fish at the closest focus position). I do agree, the surefires are mighty expensive though...And thats unfortunate, because I wish everyone could share in their quality.

I don't own a Sure Fire but I just got a SL Scorpion which I guess is a "cheap" E2-like light. I won't use the light a lot but when I need to "light the night" this should do it well. For half the price

The components & effort that goes into SureFires obviously far exceeds that of MagLites. This is clear just from looking at it, and then you take it to bits and a SureFire has the details and the professional finish that screams quality, durability, performance.
Also, as pointed out, SureFire Executive Series flashlights are not tacticallights, and don't have the beam characteristics SureFire have developed to provide optimum beam characteristics in tactical environments.
Yes, SureFire Tactical & WeaponLight Illumination Tools require much training, practice and experience to give operators the advantage. Like other tools in a specialist operator's inventory.
SureFires cost what they do because you don't just buy the best illumination tools in the World. You buy the experience, the investment, the support, the continual development and exploration that no other company offers.
The E2 is more then a flashlight, it's a SureFire, and that's worth paying for.
(It's worth paying for the E2e but that's my opinion based on experience)

I would like to try one of the brighter surefire's when I play paintball at night and see how it effects the other players accuracy. might not be a very good test but it would give me idea's how they could be useful in a emergency. I don't even know what light to buy. and aren't they coming out with a lot of new stuff? The e2 seems like a very tough and high quality built light but since it gets so hot your not suspose to leave it on long are you? Im sorry I guess I got a little of topic

Quite a few people I know have Mags of various types. Every time there's any kind of comparison or multiple lights in use at a particular time, they're all amazed that my M2 and M3 produces so much light from a small package, and the beam quality and whiteness puts Mags to shame.
It can be hard for some to justify the cost of a Surefire. Some may not need or even want a Surefire. That's fine. There are alot of great lights on the market right now. Tough competition in the higher "quality" flashlight market has benefitted all of us. Why hasn't Mag kept up with a market that they had so much influence in producing?
Mag played an important part in convincing people that there were better lights out there than your chromey hardware store and plastic Radio Shack lights. But that was what, 20 years ago? I'd really like to see Mag get on the stick and become progressive like they were back then, before people realize that the emperor has no clothes.
