Surefire L2 lanyard ring removal

What's the best way to remove the lanyard ring from my Surefire L2? Once removed will I be able to reinstall it if I decide to in the future?

My understanding is that you need to carefully pry the two halves apart with a small flat style screwdriver. I unfortunately didn't do this correctly and ended up testing the 100lb breaking strength /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
