Surefire \"LEGO\"

No, Surefire has not started selling LEGO blocks but it sure feels that way the more I play with their Executive series lights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So, I started out with the E2e-HA. Awesome light, can switch LAs so you have 60 lumens with an hour of runtime or 25 lumens with about 2 1/2 hours of runtime.

Then, I got a couple of LED heads. The older generation KL1 and a KL4. All of a sudden, I could have regulated LEDs on my light. Both heads have good flood so I could go with the higher output but shorter runtime KL4 or the lesser output but more runtime KL1. More options. Life was getting better.

Then, one fateful evening I went to my local Surefire dealer and there it was... an E1L Outdoorsman so brand new Surefire was shipping them out in baggies instead of the usual boxes, calling to me, asking me to take it home. And before I knew it, I owned a E1 body and a latest KL1 head with the TIR optic. I also bought an MN01 lamp assembly as well. (BTW, the guy behind the counter at my local dealer said they only had come in less than a week prior and someone else had already grabbed the E2L Outdoorsman a couple of days before I showed up) Now, with the new KL1 I had more throw than either of the LED heads I already had, and I could put together an E1e by popping in the MN01 into my incan bezel and tossing it onto the E1 body. I tried putting the KL1 head on the E1 body and all of a sudden I had a TW4 combo. It still amazes me how bright this combo is for its size.

Ah... so many possibilities with these things... I gotta give props to Surefire for making these lights so modular. It feels like no matter whatever the situation I can assemble a flashlight that will be able to address it.

Thank you for putting up with my deranged ramblings. My name is Leo and I am a flashaholic. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Surefire \"LEGO\"

The difference between lego and Surefire parts is about $150 per lego.. I too think surefire did well with the interchangability (I just made that word up) of the lights, So far I am limited to just taking my L4 apart and reassembling it. That's gotta count for something.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Surefire \"LEGO\"

Because of this post, I took my L2 head and put it on my e2d, and it worked, but only on "low", high would have been better. Yup, 150 dollars a lego.

Re: Surefire \"LEGO\"

Best not to switch out heads or bodies on the L1 or the L2.

Re: Surefire \"LEGO\"

I didn't do the opposite, since the L2 had a "funny" connection in the body of the light. Looked like it could short.

Re: Surefire \"LEGO\"

deranged_coder,

The TW4 combo refers to the KL4 head on an E1e body, not a KL1. It seems you have another lego block to buy. Make sure you run the E1e + KL4 (TW4) with a rechargeable battery. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

By the way, McGizmo's Aleph series lights are also interchangeable with the 'E' series Surefires. More legos!

Re: Surefire \"LEGO\"

i too dig the lego context. i also got a two vital gear FB-1's. a good bit shorter then a E1e. I put a E1e bezel and lamp on it, and it tiny!
I got the E1L early last month, and I dig it, but the VG bodies are small enough to make me put up the E1L for night stand drawer use.
I want a KL-4 but 1) expensive, and 2) i like a lot of throw, and hear the "4" is flood.
I think my next lego part will be a chopped LED in a E1e head as bright as he will do for a 1x123, or an aleph with the same brightness recipe. I am trying to stay away from going with too big a bezel size, but still get lots of throw. VDG

So my act of genius was actually a typical spelling error.. I knew it was too good to be true.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good enough for me. we all could use some new 5$ word's to zap on our buddies when explaining why SF stuff is so good.
you know, like: "yeah and with the superior lamps and machining not to mention the mind numbing interchangeability of it all, just make's those mag's of yours more worthless then belly button lint" I think it work's? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif VDG

I have a KL4 already. My bad, I typed, "I tried putting the KL1(sic) head on the E1 body" when I really meant KL4. Oops. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have not yet made the leap to getting the Aleph lights but I am sure it is only a matter of time...

Re: Surefire \"LEGO\"

Not only is it smaller, but the VG FB1 body with a SF KL1 head "carries" better because of the clip configuration. It isn't as prone to "flipping out" of your pocket. I think it's a match made in heaven.

Re: Surefire \"LEGO\"

I put a FB1 + R123+ Aleph 1 5W BB750, amazing light output in a form smaller that the E1L. There is a huge amount of flood with great throw. I left the KL4 on the E1E body. On a Aleph 1X123 body, surefire clicky + KL1.
