The new Cree LEDs have much the same, or better, output. Fenix P3D have better runtime, and Lumens in a smaller size and 1/4 the cost.

Dont get me wrong, I love my SureFires but dont know if the U2 is worth the cost? Sure its better craftmanship and can stand a nuclear explotion.....but you can buy many replacement Fenixlights for the same $$....
I'd rather have an U2 than a container full of Fenixes. Different strokes for different folks. I put quality above any other thing.

where can i get my u2 modded with better leds ? with longer run time ? someone mentioned a seoul ???
I suggest you to swap led with WW0S bin. Hardest thing is to open the head, but there are a few how-to's open the head.

My understanding with the Seoul is that the levels change quite a bit. 1-3 are very low, and 4-6 are almost the same. The electronics in the U2 are based on the 5W luxeon, so if anything, I'd just upgrade to a WWOS Lux5 and call it a day. I wouldn't want to change the great tint and perfectly matched emitter/reflector for a Cree/Seoul.

U2's have been showing up on BST frequently, some with the better WWOS emmitter already installed. It might be worth trying to snag one of those. It could save you $100 or more.

I love my U2. It does everything it was designed for. The feel and build quality is something to behold. Oh, the multi-level interface is awesome as well.

I wish I had the wider tube, but don't mind the newer design.

older U2 were equiped with 19mm internals with a paper spacer to fit 18650 perfect. newer U2 will not support 18650 without boring out. 17670 will fit perfect, but you lose runtime.

I just want to say that my new U2 will not work with AW protected 17670. Unless you can remove the black shrink wrap. I do not know if these double wrapped or not.

I kept on getting mixed reviews from people on the U2, but had to check one out for myself, did and wow. I was lucky enough to get a used like new one with the body to fit a 18650 and all for 127.00.

What an investment.

i got mine when they first released it. almost a year after i almost sold it. if i did, i would have regretted it. the U2 is the best all around use. using rechargeables around the house gives you guilt free lumens. the 1-6 level settings was very useful when i went camping, better then the L2 which only gives you 2 and the highest setting on the L2 can heat up pretty fast and the lowest may not be bright enough. plus the L2 can not take rechargeables. the U2's beam throws a bit further then the L2 due to the larger and deeper reflector but still gives you very good spill/flood cause its a 5w LED. the size of the U2 may not be suitable for everyone to EDC on their belt or pocket because it has a much larger head then the L2, but i dont have to worry about that cause i would carry it in a bag anyway. there are some ppl though that do EDC it on their belt or pocket and love it. the selector ring is pretty handy. sometimes you might need to use 2 hands but at times i find it better that way cause like the HDS, click, double click, triple click, 100 click can get really annoying especially when you miss a click to get the settings to want. there are ppl who had problems with the clickie failing, but surefire will fix it up for you. another option instead of the clickie switch, you can use the same lock out tailcap on the 6P which will be more reliable overtime due to less parts breaking, but you will have to twist for on and off. again, some ppl like it that way.

You can also buy many Hyundais for the price of a Mercedes or a BMW. I wonder why I see so many of the latter around and so few of the former.....

LOL @ this. Not a good comparison at all, unless you're talking a certain Hyundai that goes faster and runs longer than a certain Mercedes or BMW. The fact that a flashlight for under 60 dollars outperforms a flashlight in runtime and output for nearly 300 dollars, shows that that is definitely not an accurate comparison at all LMAO. Don't get me wrong, I adore my U2, I would just suggest getting it with the Cree LED like someone suggested. And what about a Lux Rebel conversion?? A more accurate comparison would be : getting some kind of car with a 500 hp V-8 in a regular looking sedan for 30,000 rather than the 150,000 for the nice looking sports car which is heavier and weighed down for even less performance than the light overpowered one. LOL.

I got my U2 few months back and it was my first *gasp* Surefire ie. EXPENSIVE flashlight that I've ever bought. It's worth the cost IMO because you're getting what you pay for. A lot of people don't seem to understand that SF is a company that work closely with its users and spend a lot of time testing & R&Ding on all their products. I spoke to them for the first time at the SHOT show this year and I'm convinced that they care about their customer and I will continue to buy their flashlight if I need something dependable. Don't get me wrong I'm all for cheap flashlights that works but SF is what people need in a no-BS or SHTF situation.

Took my U2 apart this morning, and It looks like I have a black plastic sleeve in it. I just purchased it a few days ago and I thought that the sleeves are only in the older models. What does the sleeve that everyone is talking about on here look like? Possibly I recieved the older model? Could have sat around the store for a long time. This is looking like good news for the larger battery.

The plastic sleeve is black/dark coloured hard plastic. It is about 1 mm thick.
If you want to take it out, you´ll have to put the body in the freezer for 30 minutes. This way the plastic sleeve will shrink a tiny bit, just a bit more than the aluminium body. Take the sleeve out from the top. From the bottom will be impossible due to a ridge/edge. In my case the sleeve resisted a bit, probably due to the fact that it was glued to the body.
I´ll add a link to a thread later.

And is there a reason not to buy a U2? Well, there was not for me. The combination U2/18650 makes it a fantastic light.

Yes, just like iapyx stated, the sleeve comes out from the front. Take the bezel and switch off and put the body in the freezer. Be patient, leave that sucker in there and let it freeze good. When I took mine out of the freezer, the sleeve fell out on the floor. Good Luck.

Surefire makes mighty fine lights, but to say that they are superior to everybody else, that is IMHO far from true, especially now(allthough their coming cree line up will be VERY interesting to see). There are plenty of other manufacturers that makes as reliable lights. If you look around the forum, Surefire lights(some models gets less complaints though) are prone to as much malfunction as other manufacturers. If youre in situation when you're light is vital, bring at least two.

important in case you want to use rechargeables like the 18650:

you´ll have to insert them from the top.
It will be too thick to insert from the bottom.
WARNING: never insert the battery with the plus facing down.
This will damage your light.
And always be carefull with li-ion batteries, wether rechargeable or not.
Do not over [dis-]charge.

What is the best way to determine weather you have the old or the new version of the U2? Any obvious changes?

If your U2 has a plastic sleeve inserted, you are not dealing with one of the first U2's there are. To find this out, I'd say: have a good look at your U2. Take off the tailcap. Look inside the tube. If you happen to see a black coloured tube that starts about 0,5 to 1 cm from the bottom of the body then that's the plastic insert. Next, take off the head. You won't need any tools for this. Just screw it off with your hands. You will not need a lot of force. Then place the body in the freezer and get it out after a minimum of 30 minutes. Use your pink finger to take the insert out. It's easy but it might resist a little bit.
