I look at the SF U2 and for the life of me can't see how its worth almost $300. Don't get me wrong - I love Surefires. I own 5 of them and they are the best lights EVAR. But only 80 lumens for all that $$$? Yes the selector ring is neato but I'm just not seeing it.

Hows the beam, anyway? Is it at nice tight hotspot or more of a flood like L2 and L4?

How does it compare to an L2? Seems like thats' the better deal.

You might do a search, esp. in the LED forum. There has been a lot of talk about the U2 in the past. Much discussion about the issue you describe.

I think it comes down to this: If variable output isn't importaint to you, the U2 isn't a very good deal. If it is, the SF U2 is pretty much the only game in town. BTW, I thin k it is 100 lumens. Not that it matters.

I have a U2 and like it alot! that said, I did pay good money for it knowing full well that I was paying for the unseen technology that is inside the light verses what is readily seen on the outside. I am pleased with the light and while I am still wearing a jacket at night (still quite cool up here at night)it will remain my EDC.

It has more of a hotspot than an L2/L4. The hotspot/spill size and ratio is very similar to that of an Aleph2, IMHO.

Well ...

... the U2 can provide between 2 and 80-100 lumens
... it can run between 1h and 40+ hours
... it is fully regulated
... it follows the KISS principle for operation
... it is ultra-rugged
... except for some donuts, it has a very nice medium "ram of light" beam
... can still be EDC'd by some people

It is the one light that can satisfy almost all the needs of general purpose hand held illumination. There is currently no othe rlight in this class except maybe the Gladius, but this is a different animal and just as pricey.

"But only 80 lumens for all that $$$"

First off, even if you did only get 80lu, it would be preactically no different than one at 100lu. Seriously, we harp on minor details that mean more in print than reality. Current consensus is that the 80 is the minimum but typical output is generally greater. (mine appears to be around 120lu) I got my U2 from a local dealer for $225, so sometimes it pays to shop around. Beam is much tighter than a l2 but still not a point. If you read my response in the other active u2 thread, you can get my thoughts on the L2/U2 that I have.

how do I post pictures here? I have both the L4 and U2 and haven taken a few pictures last nite with both. I purchased both of these sf's earlier this week and, like Luna I purchased my u2 for ~$227 (L4/$125). The beam is tighter, and I like the fact that, as Kiessling stated "... the U2 can provide between 2 and 80-100 lumens
... it can run between 1h and 40+ hours
I carry U2 in back pocket.

Dont get me wrong... I like L4, but U2 I carry.. so far... all week.

ok . I guess im a retard /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dedhorse.gif

I cant figure this out... sorry Bart i tried.

Anyways i posted pics of U2 and L4 on my webpage if any are interested. Im still trying to find a black hole at 1 foot distance, i see it at 2~3 feet using U2 which is last photo.
Please explain black hole i should see at 1 foot from wall ?

Thanks
Jim
