Surefires\' new batteries - what do they do?

I see in the catalog and in some descriptions on dealers' websites that they have new "low impedence technology". So what is that? Is it new or have I just not seen it? Any improvement over other batts?

Also, what happened to that CR123A battery shootout page, I searched but can't find it.

Interesting that the word "impedence" is used with regard to a DC object such as a battery. Having come from Motorola and the RF field I almost think this is a play on words or something. Not real sure. Internal resistance would come into play but impedence???????

I think the battery shootout is stickied in the battery forum if not mistaken.

Hmmm, Ok. I'm about to buy a load of batteries from you actually, do you take money orders? Any instructions regarding a MO purchase?

MOs are fine. Just add whatever shipping would be. Might PM me or something so we don't railroad this thread as it was a SF question.

Correct. The only reason I could think of using "impedance" in battery terminology would relate to the chargers and how a battery appears to them when the battery is being pulsed...?

On the other hand, "impedance" does sound sexier than "resistance," and I'm wondering whether some marketing airhead got hold of this and decided to use it in their battery claims. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Probably marketing. Surefire sure does blow alot of hot air in there descriptiveness. But at least their lights can back up the hype...

Re: Surefires\' new batteries - what do they do?

Low impedance would imply that a battery would be capable of delivering higher current if it is being delivered into a lower resistance/higher power device. For example if you tried to drive a 100 watt 12 volt bulb with 8 AAA batteries, it would quickly drain the batteries, and conversely if you ran a single 12VDC mini indicator lamp with an automotive battery, it would last for weeks. These are extreme cases of impedance mismatch. Possibly Surefire (or their OEM battery manufacture) has developed a new way to deliver higher current flow, so the battery is not the current controlling device, and the lamps are driven to their maximum specs?

Re: Surefires\' new batteries - what do they do?

I'll bet they are talking about simple internal resistance, though I suppose that a light with a switching power supply could conceivably draw power from the battery in pulses of a high enough frequency that "impedance" might be a more accurate descriptor than simple "internal resistance".

Still, I wouldn't think a simple lithium cell would have enough intrinsic inductance or capacitance that this would be a factor at the frequencies switching power circuits normally run.

Hey, Impedance works. Its just that it is always resistive at any frequency. ;-)

same thing.
