I know he films all his excursions on his own, but what, if any, flashlights does he carry? He's been in frozen tundra, Equitorial jungles, deep swamps, deserted islands, and desert locations. I personally EDC a Fenix P2D Q5 and it fills all my needs, but would it stand up to a survival situations, extreme enough as Less Stroud's needs? I realize that my idea of "survival" is, where's the closest ATM machine, and "how much gas is in my tank?" But placed in an off the beaten path survival situation, I'd want to have my EDC w/ backup batteries, a good knife, and a fire starter of some sorts. A fire piston comes to mind. But, as he films his exploits, and on the show, he carries a camera with IR for night shots, but what does he use as an EDC falshlight?!?!

I've only seen him do one show in which he mentions a flashlight. I think it was in the Colorado Rockies, and the only time he mentioned the flashlight was when he tore it up to use its parts for some McGyver type of thingy he was doing with the light. He never said what brand or battery type it was, only that it was an LED flashlight, and he never used it for its intended purpose (as a real flashlight) at all in the show.

Apparently he used it to start a fire with cotton wool over the exposed PR bulb's element

If you know how to start a fire in that kind of serious survival situation, then a flashlight is a novel luxury that isn't really necessary. Mankind managed without flashlights for the first million years or so.. :candle:

All he really needs is a match. His beard is made of tungsten filament, he's just that prepared.

Ideally, he tries to get as much stuff done as he can before it gets dark. You really don't want to go moving/wandering about at night in a strange place, where there could be all sorts of dangerous animals.

However, I believe he did try spear fishing (or something like that) at night in the episode where he was in a bayou, but he used a torch (the real kind) instead of a flashlight.

He tries to bring the minumim amount of equipment to show survival skills. A light would be a luxury and would be like bringing a tent or food.

It was a petzl tikka iirc. I was pissed, I know he had a dozen other ways of making fire. He shorted the batteries.

his night / low - light shots...are these only with the camera's on-board light? I know he's got something, for head shots when he's monologuing to the camera about how bad the night is, or the occasional nocturnal wilderness shot.

I saw the episode where he broke the incan bulb on a flashlight to start a fire. I thought it was pretty ridiculous. I'm all for carrying a light, and creative problem solving and all.....but if you're a survival guy who ventures out into the wild, without a lighter, or some matches, you're not as prepared as the average boy scout !!

Not all of his episodes portray a situation in which one intentionally enters the wild with the possibility of having to survive. From that standpoint he tries to play the average joe/jane who is unlike to carry a "pocketful" like us weird EDC junkies.

There are two flashlight episodes. In one he breaks and incan bulb to light cotton. In the other he shorts the neg and pos wires of an led light to ignite some tinder.

Yes, he's using the camera's built-in infra-red light, all standard camcorders have this feature now.

+1

Well, however many years it was, it seems that lights truly are luxury items. Unlike water, food, shelter, fire, protection, we don't "need" flashlights. I know....flashaholic blasphemy!! :p

which one is this??? (I've got everything survior man: seasons, living off the grid docs...) Or which season, which area? Is it a case of mis-remembering or is there another instance where he sacrafices a light?

Actually there are 3 episodes where he uses or destroys a flashlight or headlamp. The only time he didn't is when he was in Labrador, where he was in that cabin.

He used the incan with cotton ball in the Rockies. Horseback trip I believe. The LED destruction was within that same final series. Maybe he was portraying a lost day hiker, had supplies for the first night, had his guitar, was wearing a large funny hat. I haven't thought about it for a while but I think that was it.
