I bought the River Rock 3AA headlamp.
The battery compartment is on the rear and connected by a cable. It's battery compartment's internal dimensions are not very generous. eneloop would not drop in. If you force it in, you'll damage the wrapper. Rayovac Hybrid fits in, but still a little stiff. The enclosed Duracell alkaline batteries fits in smoothly
Features:
3 level output + two mode red rear light on battery case for walking, biking, etc. They're on its own switch.
Dimming:
Three modes + strobe. Dimming is PWM. You clearly see the "dotting" effect.
output:
It's not that amazing. From a ceiling bouce test, it appears marginally brighter than SL 4AA PP with NiMH and noticeably with brand spankin' new alkaline. Tint is very nice and much floodier than the SL 4AA.
current:
1A new alkalines. The long battery life claimed on the package is probably because of the dimming effect.
0.65A partially discharged NiMH. With NiMH that can fit in there (2,000mAh range) I would expect no more than 3 hrs of use.
Eneloop doesn't. Kodak 2500mAh doesn't, there is no way on earth Duracell 2650 would.
Unprofessional test. I set my camera to F2.7, ISO 100, one second and held stationary. The room was illuminated with the light under test. Everything was kept constant except the test subject. While this method's been criticized as not being very good, it's great for me, because I don't need to go buy anything to do it.
Control: SL 4AA PP Luxeon
RR K2 with partially discharged NiMH
RR K2 with new enclosed alkaline batteries
Overall, I'm not exactly impressed. The current consumption is embarassingly high and it really doens't stand out over an over-driven Luxeon I (SL 4AA) in output or efficacy.
Inability to use good NiMH due to compartment size is a real bummer. For this price, you really can't find a brighter headlamp.
