any thoughts on comparisons between techass's versalux and inretech aa maglight drop in led? i want to buy several of these (either one or the other). brightness is the main concern using alkalines, not so much the battery life.

Welcome to CPF.

I own neither but this info may help you. The versalux employs a nichia LED that is regulated which means the voltage is increased to optimize its' performance. The InReTech uses a Luxeon Star LED. It is unregulated or direct drive. However a Luxeon Star is a much brighter LED naturally. It also has a long run time.

The search feature here will lead you to other modifications such as the Opalec. The brightest mods are built and sometimes offered by members that are much more knowledgable than I. Certainly, some of these members (one of which is InReTECH) will post back to you tomorrow and give you better information and correct anything I've said that was not correct.

Just wanted to make sure you were welcomed to the group ASAP.

Have fun. Get your credit card out. Buy an ARC AAA. If you are ever not sure what to get always get...well I'll let someone else tell you about that.

New BadBoy drop in modules will be available soon as well. These are comprised of the Luxeon 1 watt LED and a constant current driver. Very consistant and bright but shorter burn time than the opalec or InRetech..............

Welcome and caution, prolonged visits can be habit forming.

Edit: BTW, after you get some nice solid state light sources in your mags, you might want to spend some extra bucks and put a nice mineral glass lens in, in place of the plastic lens.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Try Frei & Borel for mineral lenses, look for Mineral Glass Crystals ZEMG-220 , they are 22 mm lenses and cost $2.50 , but there is a $15.- minimum order...

Not bad IMHO, I paid €10.- for just one...

Hope this helps.

hey hey hey! I got mine for SGD 10 bucks too! At a watch shop, mine was 22.5mm tho, was a bit worried that it's too big and can't fit, but luckily it did and now it's great!

LOL, but SGD $10.- is about €5.63 ...

Glad it fitted though.

I don't have a MiniMag myself, I use a Brinkmann Legend AA ( modded by Lambda to a Lambda llluminator

), so for actual size measurements you would need someone with a MiniMag...

Any thoughts about batts? Lithium versus Alkaline? How about rechargables in a cold environment?

I'm always looking for info, so any thoughts are appreciated.

I've got to lean towards lithiums most of the time. When I was in the AF, our Forward Air Controllers, special ops folks, and security forces favored them. You want to set up a bare runway in the ice cold and have those lights going for days...A lot bigger batteries than we're using for our little lights, but same technology. Gotta go with the long shelf life...blah, blah, blah...real pain to get rid of 100s of pounds though! I imagine some Army folks have something to say about that too!

Trouble is, like the Streamlight 4AA 7 led...they melt some lights...guess it depends on the step up circuits?
