Hi all, I'm looking for a couple of lanterns to light my tent up a bit. I often go on week long camping trips (4WD so weight is not very important) and I'm looking for a comfortable lantern for lighting the inside of my tent and my tent has a shelter out the front of it with a hook for another lantern and this area usually has a table under it that we sit at to eat, read and chat.

I'm looking to get two Lanterns for around $70 so $35 each to be clear. I have found this Coleman Micropacker but I read when searching these forums from one user that they have a strong casing but flimsy electronics inside with a set up that could potentially cause the LED to burn out but there was not much more said about it and everyone on Amazon seems to love them, claiming amazing lighting and battery life (For a $10 Lantern) so what do you think? Can you suggest anything better?

Distance is not a big issue 6' radius would be fine, but I'd also like to unclip the outside one on my way to late night bathroom breaks which is another reason the Micro shined for me as it has that back slide up reflector thing I can use to focus it for exactly that.

Runtime is fairly important I should like it to last at least 5 days (3-5 hours use each night) and not go so weak I couldn't use it to find anything.

Very Important Durability (Camping), and that's all really!

Thanks!

People around here (myself included) like the Rayovac Sportsman LED Lantern (SE3DLN).

Its a medium sized lantern, runs on 3D cells.

I've seen that one around while I've been looking. I'm a little worried about the green "easy find" blinker, I am very sensitive to repetitive flashes I find them very annoying, is it a strong flash? I suppose I could just paint over the green LED. How is it's low mode lighting while in a tent? would it provide enough light to read a book if I had it hanging from the top of my ~6' tent while I'm lying down reading a book.

Thank you!

I do like the look of the Seige, the ~300 Hour runtime and night vision mode look great but it's unfortunately a bit out of my price range. With the suggestions you guys have given me though I'm tempted to just get one lantern and spend bigger on the one. Just buy a couple dollar keychain lantern for the part of the tent I'm not currently using and move the big one where I am going to be.

Thanks so much for the suggestions guys, please do keep them coming I do like to see all the good options to compare! haha.

The Seige can be bought on eBay for $36 shipped. That only puts it $2 over your $70 price range. Are you in the USA?

No, I'm in Australia cheapest it seems I can get it is for around $40 + $15-20 shipping. Which comes out as a bit more in AUD. But I really liked the Lanterns you guys have mentioned it looks to me purely from stats that The Seige is the better one as you would expect for being nearly twice the price so I'm thinking I'll just grab one of them, I was thinking of getting two Sportsman's but for whatever reason Amazon won't ship them to Aus but they will ship The Siege.

So you really like The Siege? Do you feel it's low (295 Hour) is good enough to use the majority of the time? Also does it give off a comfortable glow or is it a bit of a harsh bright office like light?

Cheers.

I'm sorry, but I don't have one personally. I've just seen good feedback online. It will be my next purchase.

Best bet go to an outdoor store as they have loads on display and check out those Led tent strips as they are brill.

They sound good Mcnair but unfortunately I am looking for a Lantern so I can take it with me places and move it to the table for when I eat. Also I feel I don't know what to be looking in a flashlight/lantern especially in a well lit store which is why I come here to ask you enthusiasts what you think haha.

Thank you.

In the UK i use both, strips put on the roof of the tent plus a lantern on the table plus an edc to nip to the loo in the night. The big stores in the UK like Go Outdoors always have a few tents up so i pop inside with a lantern off the display to try out.

I lost my EDC not long ago, Protac 2L and because I swear it's around the house I'm reluctant to buy another so I do want a Lantern I can use for the late night trips haha at least until I find my Protac 2L. Really I should get a headlamp but I find them uncomfortable and unsightly haha makes me feel like a bit of a tool.

Thanks everyone, so it looks like I'm going to go with The Siege unless anyone has any other contenders?

The Black/Glo version is the one without the location flasher.

UST also has the miniature "pico" versions of these lanterns.

Much more compact than the above versions.

that UST lantern, runs on Three 1.4W Nichia LED's

are they the UGLY Blue tint Nichias?
I bought a Dorsey 2AAA penlight 41-1218 because it had a Nichia led and the tint is such an ugly blue, I won't even give it to the grand-kids.

The Coleman Triago is 3 lanterns in one. It is a 3 sided pyramid and each side detaches. You can leave one inside the tent, one outside the tent, and take the 3rd one to the bathroom with you. It uses newer LED tech so runtime shouldn't be an issue. You have the option of 4 D cells or a rechargeable battery pack. I am on my phone, so it would take forever to link something, but the Coleman website has more info. The Japanese Coleman website has a lot of pictures. Price is $100.

That's what I'm thinking. Otherwise, I probably would have picked up one myself.

NO sir, they are white slightly on the warm side. This lamp is a real winner.
