no need fore Nichia Led just 8-10 lumen bright on high
and a AA Mako sounds superb.
I want one:wave:

best regards

In order to be as bright as an Arc you either have to use a Power LED (Cree XRE, Seoul P4, etc) or overdrive a 5mm LED at ridiculous rates. 60mA is the amount the Arc pushes through the LED and even the Nichia LED is rated at only 20mA, thus severely shortening the life of the LED.

If I am not mistaken the Photon II is driven at 60mA and I have been using them for many years without any perceived ill effects. As the battery drains the mA figure drops. The Freedom model also is at 60mA on high IIRC. (CS, DS, GS)

😳 i dident know that.

I've got an MO ready if a Mako AA w/wide beam moves into limited production, Size be damned!

Mayo

Yeah. I'd be interested as well. I'd like a higher power LED in there though.

>>bmstrong: How'd the tritium installation go?

Perfect! I used moeman to do mine. He got the vial perfectly centered. I can't say enough about the quality and job he did.

In one of Endeavour's posts, he mentioned they would all be off center a bit to preserve better water resistance. He noted if it was centered, water resistance would be compromised. That said, mine is perfectly centered..:poke:..just kidding...it's off center, too.😕

Have a great day!!!
Mike

sorry i did miss that.
then it's nothing wrong with mine🙂
if it will preserve better water resistance.

Yep, the whitewall hunters will not be happy, maybe thats why so many Makos have sold recently...

The the real users of this light (not WWH's) are just floored by it! I cant believe the amount of output for the battery type and runtime. The beam is actually real nice when using it for what it was meant for.

Is it bright?

Nope, but bright enough to put the beam out 20 feet at night in a non polluted area. 60 hours on low and 20 hours on high? How can you not have one of these on your keys?

I have a red one and a white one, and love them both, count me in for a AA! :naughty:

PSM, I am glad you like them!

Don't need to be a whitewall hunter to not be happy with a light and it should go without saying that beam shape/quality do matter.

I've tried repeatedly to like this light, and I do like the feel in my hand as well as the operation of it. Maybe my two are the only ones that had this particular beamshape, but mine has a fairly bright ring of light that if gone would make this a keeper for me.

It's good for you that you like the beam but I like the beam of all my other lights, none of which has a ring around it much better.

Oh and by the way, I'm a real user too. :nana:

i think we all have the "cree rings"
butt that is no issue fore me.
my mako has Bean on my car keys since i got mine.
it's very weal built and i really like the quality off this light it is built like a rock.
and by the way it's waterproof.
i did forgot mine in my pants when they was in the washer.
and it works flawless.

bullterrier
sorry fore my english😉

Bullterrier,
I was about to post the exact same thing. I to forgot my keys in my pocket when i did the wash. I would say the mako is far more than water resistant IMO. Also great light, love mine.

To bullterrier & others, from the first post:
The beam will not be perfect, as is the nature of 5mm LEDs, but at a distance of 10 feet or so, it's nice. The beam has a dim, incidental corona (somewhat similar in character to my old CR2 Ion XT) due to the LED not being 100% efficient in emitting its light within the 15 degrees it's rated at, and the presence of the main spot within the beam is variable from unit to unit. This could have been countered by sacrificing water resistance and blocking off all the sides of the LED except for the very tip, but the general practicality afforded by water resistance was not a sacrifice I was willing to make.

The overriding objectives in this light were to create something with a reasonable color to the beam, with two stages and long runtimes. In my opinion this was achieved, and the Mako does what it is I had set out to do with the design. There are always ways to make things differently and several features one has to balance out when designing something, and I'm sorry if what suited my needs didn't meet yours.

I still do not understand why it is people have become so intently focused on the sales of the Mako; the number sold is trivially small compared to the total run, and certainly far less of a percentage flipped onto the secondary market than most other custom lights I've seen, inclusive of some of my own previous lights. Some folks seem to enjoy stoking some myth of widespread sales and insinuating some sort of subversive motive, and thus far, that simply has not been the case.

bmstrong: I'm still exploring options on how best to take advantage of the higher capacity and characteristics of the AA cell, and we'll have to see if there's sufficient interest to merit a run at some point in the future.
