Just an observation..

Has anyone asked Kozen if head & body (appears different in photos) are made from same (HT) Ti alloys?

$365 for a host!
Well, after an apparent sightseeing trip through Little Rock, USPS delivered my VME yesterday. I don't see any difference in color, so they appear to this non expert to be of the same alloy. The finish and color are consistent throughout.

I've been playing around with 2 AA (energizer lithium) cells in an MD3 and M91B dropin. Nice amount of light at 0.65 amps. Likely get 4 hours of runtime. Does anyone have experience with an adapter to tighten up the batteries in the MD3 tube, either commercially available or DIY?

I have not tried the lithiums, but I can’t get an m91b to work with 2 eneloop AA.

For the sleeves I’m not sure what is available, but cutting milk jugs into sleeves and putting it into the light keeps batteries from rattling in several of my lights and they actually work better because there is no rattle whatsoever.

These sleeves from Oveready are designed to hold AA's to fit in a 17mm diameter tube originally designed for CR123's like Surefire 6p, 9p, etc. I also use them in my Malkoff MD2 and MD3 to take up most of the battery rattle. They make a 2 cell and a 1 cell. You would need one of each for the MD3.

Looks like the 2-cell is OOS (and re-stocking is unlikely at this point), but if one could get by with using multiple 1-cell version, ...

That 4000K is really, really nice, and while I don't have a way to measure it, it seems more 4500K than 4000K. It's a lot less yellow than other emitters, and even though I actually prefer that yellowish, the 219B is shockingly neutral.

The version differences usually impact the output and draw; every batch is a little different. I think the last set, the LLLL ones were really, really low. Some people prefer that, others do not.

And yeah, it sounds like there are no plans to restock those on Illumn. I remember him saying, the minimum purchase is now 25 of a custom item, so I think he's worried about sitting on a lot of stock that no one buys. I half wish he'd try a survey or poll through his subscribed e-mails (or even here), because there have been several of us wanting him to restock. Before he ran out of stock, he was essentially the only way to get L, LL, LLL, or LLLL neutral M31's, and LLL and LLLL M61's. I think if he only had to stock maybe LLL and LLLL models of both, maybe it'd be more likely. And, from how the last batch went, that's how they sold out...because, again, that's the only source of the LLL and LLLL dropins these days.

Honestly, even though it's "stepping on his toes," I think it's probably worth reaching out to Kosen, and letting him know you're interested in some LLL, LLLL, and/or M31 modules. Last I contacted him, he said he sees a bit of interested in M31's and LLL/LLLL drop-ins, but it sounds like he was on the fence (I wonder if he was trying NOT to step on Illumn's toes). It seems like Kosen is moving towards building out an online storefront, so maybe him being the place to get LLL and LLLL modules could be a nice lineup to have. He'd probably be game for doing the 519A, too. I like both the 219B and 519A enough that I'd get a few of whatever is released.
Well now you've gone and done it. Based on your ringing endorsement, I'll be on the lookout for an M31L 219B V3 to call my own.

Unfortunately, those have a "lid with a hole" so you can't position one around two cells.

I have the 17mm 2-cell, and while it works, it is a bit expensive for what it is.

Moving forward, I'm just going to get a 14MM ID O-ring, and that should take up the slack nice enough. One in the middle of each Eneloop should work just fine.

Good luck. They don't seem to come up often. I REALLY wish Kosen would start some batches of M31's and especially in L, LL, and/or LLL.

I've sort of been falling down a rabbit hole with LiFePO4 cells, hahaha. They're neat, and you can even get an 18650 (only 2000mAh).

While I wait, I may order an M61NLL in a VME with MDC 18650 body to tide me over. I already have an MDC 1CR123, so that should keep me busy swapping components for a bit. Have you any recommendations as to good quality 18650 LiFePO4 cells? I wouldn't be buying until I have secured an M31L but that could be cool in an MDX2 with a high/low bezel switch.

The 18mm 2-cell has been OOS for at least a year. But the 17mm 2-cell is still available: https://www.oveready.com/flashlight/aa-delrin-battery-sleeves-17mm/

There is a little bit of rattle, but it's better than without the sleeve. I agree w/ the other poster who said it's expensive for what it is (especially once shipping is added). But, the whole setup is expensive for what it is. The 17mm might also have an advantage in terms of lego-ability. Presumably it could be used in like an Elzetta Charlie w/ the ZFL head, or a 9P Surefire as well, where the 18mm sleeve might not fit. I've never used 2AA in either of those, though, to know if there are any length issues or similar.

Good quality? Not as much.

Dodgey Chinesium? Oh, yeah... Soshine still makes some:

The 1800mAh is a protected one with a button top.

If I get adventurous, I might roll the dice and see if I can get one direct from Soshine's Ali store.

NORMALLY, I don't encourage getting cells from Ali, but LFP cells are pretty much China's wheelhouse at this point (they went ALL IN on it years back), and LFP are less dangerous than Li-ion, so I'm more willing to take the risk, as they're kind of ALL mediocre performers.

Kaidomain sells some Soshine LFP cells, too, so I might pay a bit more for the convenience of tossing a few in with an order. I wanted to try a deep red drop-in, anyway, and I think there's a free shipping threshold, haha.

My small Malkoff collection.

3 x MDC 1AA
1 x MDC 2AA
Stock except for 3 stainless bezels, running Energizer Lithium batteries.

Yes, I always use lanyards, these are for fun, glow-in-the-dark (GITD) paracord with some added bling. I normally use the standard green paracord (I have one pictured) but when we go camping, traveling, etc. it's great to be able to find your light in a dark room, tent or vehicle. The GITD paracord glow will not last as long as the GITD "charms" you can purchase from a place like CountyComm. Most all of them will glow all night and your dark adjusted eyes can still locate them in the morning. I keep one GITD object on each light.

The 20 Oz. bottle cap...makes a perfect lens protector that requires effort to snap on and off. I think these came from Canada Dry Ginger Ale, I think. You'll need to experiment. The caps will NOT work with the crenelated bezel. In normal use, the caps stay on. Don't think I've ever had one come off.

Links to glow-in-the-dark (GITD) stuff, I'm using the first two below in the pics:

They have other items, search under glow.

I see that glass lenses for the mdx heads are now available on the Malkoff website. Does anyone have experience with this lens. Is it worth upgrading from the plastic lenses? I have 7 MDX heads, and would happily upgrade if there is a significant difference.
Nice! Tempered glass, 98% transmissibility and Gene includes a front seal & a rear nylon bearing washer. I ordered one for each of my MDX flashlights. Now I need some of these sized for the MDC & VME.

This sounds interesting. I'm going to give it a whirl.

Only Malkoff can answer that question...the rest is speculation.
I rephrase the question. Why do you think Malkoff use SST20 and not 519A? In my understanding 519A is a better and more modern LED? Are there any pros in using SST20? Do Malkoff think SST20 is better or are they just behind in technology? I have three Malkoff P60 which are great, and also some old Lumens Factory. I'm looking for some new P60 and Lumens Factory seems more tempting then Malkoff. Malkoffs shipping cost of 65$ is brutal compared to LF.

Is the SST-20 die smaller, and thus provide more throw, than the 519A?

When you have skilled flashlight makers offering certain LED's you know there are good reasons why.
That was my thought as well...a slightly smaller die, plus decent color rendition. My m61 heads have a more condensed hotspot and throw further than my larger/deeper reflectored novatacs.

Maybe he just gets a good deal on SST's vs Nichia?
