Don't put too much stock in the photos as they are mainly for comparative purposes and, although I try to get them close, they aren't exactly the same as what you would have seen. As you noted the amount of light pollution will affect the "usable throw" per your definition, in addition to things like atmospheric conditions, your own eyesight, familiarity with the subject or contrasting (or not) backgrounds. I don't think there is a single set distance but if there is some sort of standard I'm sure someone will set me straight.

I can say that last night (45 degrees Fahrenheit, 80% humidity, light misting rain and the light pollution shown in the photo), I would be able to easily identify someone I am familiar with if they were sitting on that swing at 40 yards. For unfamiliar subjects I would be able to determine what they are wearing and their general description (estimated height, weight, etc).

At 60 yards I would be able to tell the difference between an adult and a child but I doubt I would recognize my own mother at that distance.

Nice review!

Regarding your data on the V1 and V2, the V1 was rated at 600 lumens OTF, and the V2 was rated at 750 OTF.

Thanks. Do you know if those were the max output values or the sustained output? When Gene gave me the numbers I think he was just counting the sustained output.

At the time these were released, it was common to rate them at turn on OTF. That's what they were rated at.
There was a little flap created around that time with the issues regarding OTF and sustained, with many lights at that time, not just Malkoff. But Gene began to give the OTF at turn on, and then a sustained OTF after warm up, after this occurred.
The V1 was 600 lumens OTF at turn on, and IIRC it was someting like 540 after warm up. The V2 was 750 lumens OTF at turn on, and a little over 700 after warm up. But, some people reported variations from this, based on different lights, and different integrating spheres. It was all sort of ridiculous IMO, because there are always variations from one light to the next, and also in spheres, and so to me the issue was a mountain out of a molehill. The beams were so different anyway, that there was no real comparison to be made, other than to describe how different they were.
I have all the Wildcats except the new one, and they are quite different, except the V4 is really just a higher output V3 with the XPG2. The V1 is like a follow-spot in a theater. The V2 has a very wide spill beam with a definite hot spot, with more power output than the V1, but they both throw about the same distance.

That is some great information, thanks for sharing. I have read through a lot of the old posts on here about the early versions of the Wildcat but I have no personal experience with them prior to V4. It looks like your after warm-up numbers are pretty similar to what Gene quoted me but, like you said, I don't doubt that there was variation between lights and testing equipment.

I did notice that I quoted the maximum output for the V5 in that table so I went back and changed it to be more in line with the sustained output numbers for the other versions. Thanks for pointing this out!

Great review!! Do you know if it is current controlled? I really want one, but would like for there to be no PWM on low.

What an awesome light.
Kind of glad they're not in stock...... must resist.

Re: The NEW New Malkoff 1600 Lumen Wildcat

If the tint is anything like the 5000K on Vins MTG2 drop in I will be a very happy camper. 🙂

Same here!

I live my MT-G2 drop in in my bored 9P,

Can't wait to justify the cash for the Wildcat V5!
