Thinking of playing with the big boys

Well I just put up for auction my whole staw wars collection so if your interested hit up ebay- Im either going to get a pgl-3 or a couple leadlights and a diode from ifixlasers. My question is to my fellow laser nuts who own both and give me an honest opinion of the pgl-3 and if its worth it, the cost and info to buy one,- or would I be better off buying a couple leadlights from vital and finding the best one and add a ifixlasers diode. Can anybody confirm these diodes are better or are they the same?

Also I have some white heat paste in the garage left over from a carburator pickup coil install I did,would covering my diode with this help to transfer heat away from it? Anyone know of a heatsink mod tutorial anywhere?

Arnold is right..... stay away from that stuff. they used it in Australian navy ships in like the 60/70's or something like that. real bad for your health. The navy made the sailors scrape it off or something back then and didn't give them any protection. they are all crook now.

Deezdrama05 - buy some Arctic Silver - it looks like this:

It is the best compound money can but and works wonders for Leadlights - just take out the diode and fill in the gaps around the MCA. Be careful not to get it on the pins of the diode though as it is conductive. You can also put a thin film around the barrel so that the heat is transferred to the casing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

awesome thanks guys. Where can this stuff be bought? So I can fill the space around the ktp chrystal with this? just be careful not to get it on either end of crystal? Does this stay a paste or does it harden?

Would it be a good idea to remove the diode and slide some shrink tubing on each diode pin? would keep it from shorting to brass ring? Do the yag4 and ktp crystals also produce heat from being lased through? Where exactly should this stuff be put? Sorry just wanna make sure I dont mess up. I always try to read,and obtain as much information as possible before attempting something. Thanks

I'm not sure for the newest ones but Artic silver is supposed to be non conductive...

Nope, it's conductive and impossible for it not to be because of the amount of silver in it.

but as long as u r careful it should be ok i have AS5 on my diode + all places in the barrell and it hasnt caused any problems

You will find Arctic Silver for a decent price at www.newegg.com
By decent price, the stuff is fairly expensive as it contains real silver, but it goes a long way.

I recommend working on a newspaper surface while wearing disposable latex gloves and have a roll of paper towels, rubbing alcohol, q-tips and toothpicks handy. It is very difficult to clean from your fingers, and will get on everything you touch. Buy a whole box of gloves!

With Arctic Silver, A super thin layer is all you need. The more you use, the less effective it becomes.

I highly doubt it. I've been dissapointed with Radio Shack lately. At more than one store too. They seem to have less and less things and when they run out, they don't restock them even though it says that that particalar store has them online. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

No, Radio Shack does not carry it. They will only carry cheap white thermal grease.

If Radio Shack DID carry it, they would charge you 3 times as much for it. You could easily be talking $35 to $50 for a small tube.

You'll find it online at www.newegg.com . I doubt you'll find it at any brick & morter store.

I've only ever bought their "Arctic Silver 5" compound. The 1cc tube for $7.99 should be the one. I don't know what their "Ceramique" compound is, but I'm wagering to guess some white paste stuff.

Now, thermal compound will only facilitate the smooth transition of therms from one surface to another. By no means does the leadlight housing make a suitable heatsink. You will increase the effeciency of heat transfer to the housing, but then what?

Just make sure you know where you're going with this project. You can spend a good 2 hours messing with arctic silver (it's disgusting stuff!) and find very little payoff for your work.

I use ceramique for laser pointers and computer processors.

The compound is non conductive(negligable amount) an offers the same thermal qualities.

I stated this a few threads back, it really is quite good. Its definately not your "run of the mill silicon paste".
