Thor 10MCP owners: some questions reg. dimensions

I have a few questions for whoever has a Thor 10MCP spotlight. I am going to mount one, eventually with an HID conversion, below an RC helicopter that I use for photography work. It will be situated behind the center of gravity on a servo tilt mechanism that works in tandem with the camera servo tilt mechanism, and will power off of the existing alternator that I made for the electrical system. I need to know the lens diameter of the Thor including the bezel? I also would like to know the weight of it without a battery, as well as the depth from the lens to the frontmost part of where the battery sits (approximate on this one). I will be sawing it in half around the battery compartment and making it mountable to the fixture. I appreciate any dimensions offered as I am making a new PVC and aluminum undercarriage for the heli and need to design it around the light dimensionally and weight wise. I was trying to post some pictures below of the current setup with just a camera and heli but cant figue out how to do it w/o a website reference.

Thanks,
Eric

i dont know the diminsions but that helocopter has better have some lifting power. the thor weighs a ton, and by ton i mean around 12 pounds, but thats with battery.

that the he** is a kilogram? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

2.2 pounds to the kilo.

Is it 2.2 Kils for the battery or the light w/o battery? I have about 15 LBS of additional payload available on the heli beyond the 5 LBS of camera equipment that is already committed, i.e. 20 lbs total weight is permissible. Center of gravity placement is more important than total weight in this application. Thanks to all for the info, now can we get lens diameter info (including the bezel)? I have an X-990 and am quite happy with it in the narrow mode. How wide is the Thor setup going to be compared to an X-990 on narrow?

Thanks,
Eric

Have you considered stripping out just the beefy aluminum reflector and the glass? It would be easy to put some electrical tape around the glass and reflector to hold it securely. Then you could put some brackets on it with JB weld or other epoxy. The big rubber ring is a waste of weight. If you want some protection, the original plastic housing is more than enough...

It's sealed with an O-ring and the reflector is

OK, I see that a bit of the bulk is reduced by getting rid of some housing peices. I have never held a Thor light, so I have to take your work on until I get one. This application will expose it to slight exhaust sooting, and I'd like to keep it sealed as well as possible. I would consider using a KCHighlights type of light just mounted on it's lug. I am discouraged from those types because they're expensive and the beam may be car-truck appropriate, but non round, etc. in a spotlight application. I'd post a couple of pictures of the contraption I use if I could figure out how to do it. I have no website to URL reference, is that needed?

Thanks,
Eric

If you're discarding the Thor's battery and part of the enclosure, why not just go with a 100 watt off-road driving light instead? They are NOT expensive, compared to a Thor (under $15 if you shop around). A HID bulb should still fit the reflector, and you're free to mount the ballast wherever you choose.

BTW, if you'd like to post pictures of your project, ImageShack.us is a free, absolutely bulletproof way of doing it. No fees, no registration, and super-easy image uploads – it's the shiz-nizzle! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Thor 10MCP owners: some questions reg. dimensi

Skibane, thanks for the info. I have looked up some such driving lights in the 100w range. They are rated to only 200,000 CP, now I understand that CP is a measurement of the brightest spot, and Lumens refers to total brightness. Why are the driving lights rated to 200,000 and my X-990 is rated to 7 mil. CP? A driving light for $20 or so is still an attractive choice, I am just concerned that the CP rating is low. Below I have tried to post some images of the current landing gear. [image]

Dude, that is so cool! Can we see a photo of the whole helicopter? How are you triggering the camera remotely? Are you concerned that vibration will blur the photos, especially at night?

Re: Thor 10MCP owners: some questions reg. dimensi

I use a nine channel transmitter with a pushbutton for the transmitter and a slider for the tilt (see photo). A video feedback is maintained to a tv set on the ground. In an application with the light and camera tilting in tandem I'd use a second transmitter with for example the throttle channel assigned to the light, and the collective pitch channel assigned to the camera. They can be programmed to work together with a good amount of accuracy and fine tuning electronically my programming the transmitter correctly. Vibration is not too much of a problem with a well tuned helicopter, below is an image with compressed resolution in the daytime using a worn out, overloaded 30 sized helicopter that had some vibration issues, and it is relatively blur free. The heli I have just gotten together is about three times more powerful than that one and should handle this work more comfortably (haven't gotten it up much yet). As far as night activities are concerned, I am patrol cop and I am developing a platform for area searches and rooftop searches at night. Quality photography is not needed for that kind of work at night.

Re: Thor 10MCP owners: some questions reg. dimensi

Hello Disciple,
The Thor-X has a 9 inch lens diameter including the rubber bezel. The diameter of the glass lens itself is about 1/8 of an inch short of 7 inches. The Thor-X is about 14 inches long, and 12lbs sounds about right. Your idea sounds way cool, even more so after looking at your pics!
