Those border patrol lights are too damn bright

Arizona observatory scientists ask border patrol to keep their 1000w lights pointing downwards. And what is a "fritted" lens? (2nd paragraph from the bottom).

Wow, you know you have a bright light when its infamous for DESTROYING CAMERA'S. HOLY CRAP!

A direct hit from the helicopter's spotlight could fry the hundreds of extremely sensitive photomultiplier tubes in the dish's $200,000 camera.

A quick search yields that fritted glass appears to (in some cases, typically architecturally) have a diffused quality to it.

Knowing what I do about camera pickup tubes, this is entirely possible. I've seen tubes damaged from bright lights before.
