I need a very tight spot but high output led flashlight to spot signs at night. At least a 5 watt. What would you suggest

First off, :welcome:

Secondly, you need to focus and lumen and lux measurements, not watts. Watts mean next to nothing with LED's. The "5 watt" flashlights of just a year or two ago are easily outshined with a 2-3 watt flashlight of today.

The easiest lights that comes to mind is a simple MagLED, and the Task Force 2xC Cree

If a tight spot from a LED is what you desire, the Dereelight DBS v2 is what you need, if you can swing the ~ $125 it costs. If you need cheap and local, take Marduke's suggestion and look for a Task Force 2C Cree, I found mine at Lowes, just make sure it says "X-Lamp Technology" on it and not "Luxeon". The X-Lamp is the new Cree XR-E.

First off, how much are you willing to spend.

Forget the watts business. A current gen LED driven at"1 watt" has more output then the last gen LED driven at "3-5 watt". Focus more on lumen and the drive current.

The best throwing stock LED light is the Dereelight DBS. The beam should be usable 150+ meters away.

How far away are the signs?

:welcome:

Lowes TF 2C CREE "150+ lm" for the win. If you get Fenix branded one, they may have a higher output, but they don't fare so well in collimation. You'll have to find the 2C version with grey package at your Local Lowe's. The one in red package is the older version and you don't want to get that one.

I'd have to agree with everyone above, the Lowe's Task Force 2C is a winner for $30!

I can't help you much if you want cheap and using normal batteries. But the best LED thrower of any type is the Dereelight DBS. The v2 is a bit shorter and made nicer, but does not have more throw. (make sure to get a digital pill, marked with a "D". They will be brighter in high mode than manual pills because their drive is 1.2A vs 1.1A).

Other good LED throwers are the Raidfire Spear, Tiablo A8 and A9, and maybe the Lumapower MRV. There are no other LED flashlights with even nearly their throw (Fenix has great LEDs, but not throwers).

PS In case you didn't know, "throw" is how bright it is at the center. So to spot things far away you want more throw. Of course, to acheive this, all LEDs mentioned as throwers have a very tight hotspot.

The Lowes task force cree is the lowest price...very strong thrower you can get. Make sure you get one that says " 60 times brighter on the package" The last year model says" 30 times brighter" on the package, and is not the new cree high power unit. Same price and part number at Lowes. If you got more to spend...lots of choices. THe Dereelight DBS is great...probably overkill.

In addition to the DBS, a Dereelight CL1H with smooth reflector can out throw the Task Force, and if you can still get the Regalight it out throws the CL1H and Task Force.

thanks for the input. I am NOT looking for cheap or rechargeable. I had seen the Inova X03 which looked deceit but I knew there was better. I have a couple of Fenix lights and they are great pocket lights but excessive side spill.

Unless you want to start modding, the Dereelignt DBS with the digital modules and 18650 batteries(many would suggest AW's) + chargers would be your best choice.

In a dark enough area, the beam is usable at 200 meters.

Olight T20 Q5. Or one of the new Tactical versions.

He'll have the newer tactical versions up on the page soon. Tight spot with some sidespill. Small enough to put in your pocket. The newer tactical versions are supposed to be capable of being run on a single rechargeable 17670. Very good build quality. Probably sufficient for your needs.

I'm not fond of larger lights that require a rifle sling or a holster to carry with you.

Awesome! However, I think we're talking production lights, not custom. :) However, maybe you could start building those and sell them. :)
I'm willing to make one for anyone who wants it. I am currently working on refining the design on many fronts. Such as easy upgradability. More details will be posted within the coming weeks.
