I have been searching for my holy grail (titanium ball chain) for years. Finally found it. www.MrTitanium.com sells it in a variety of lengths, and the little connector is even engraved "TITANIUM." Now my hundreds of dollars of titanium keychain tools, can have a home that suits them.

I can't but them down. My wife wonders if they are prayer beads (because I won't put them down). I tried to explain the grippy feeling titanium has - and how long I've searched for a cool titanium key chain... but she still doesn't get it.

I am very pleased with my Ti chain from Avant-Garde Jewelry Co. A little more expensive than MrTitanium though. But when I had a special request to put a lobster claw on both ends of the chain, they added the second clasp at no additional charge.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but wouldn't a ball chain made of titanium make it much harder to break away, if you needed it to do that?

I suppose USN is home to me. Though, I am not really a knife guy.

I have been thinking about how to have the coolest pocket dump since I was old enough to have my own house key; The best watch, pen, knife, flashlight, lighter (and whistle?).

To me the best gear is useful, sentimental, and valuable.

Useful - means something that I actually use on a regular basis - that is durable/waterproof for the field and simple/plain enough to not attract attention in a business casual world.

Sentimental - means something that actually has a story. Something that reminds me of good feelings. If I am going to tote something around everyday, it may as well make me feel good.

Valuable - as in the exact opposite of disposable. Also, there is the whole trade your watch for a car in the Sahara myth.

So, where do I turn to find folks that think like I do on-line. EDC Forums, seems to be filled with folks that pride them selves in how low cost their stuff is. I have two titanium flashlights, so I track CPF. (But lets face it, there is not enough time to feel sentimental about a flashlight, when there is always a new generation to replace the one in your pocket).

So, as a former soldier, and a former LEO, I end up on USN - even though I am not really a knife guy.

A week into my titanium ball key chain, I am still really excited about it. I love the way in caries my titanium Inka pen, my titanium Atwood whistle, my my Deal Extreme lighter, and my Photon Micro-Light II (I prefer simple on and off - why do manufacturers think someone would ever stand holding a tiny flashlight, with it blinking out "SOS?")

I was thinking about a ti chain like that for the Arc-P around my neck, because I agree, they are very cool, but to pay 70 bucks or so for one when I can get a SS one from Home Depot in the lighting section for 2 dollars....man, I just can't do it.

Well , to each his own... I guess the same analogy applies to our dear hobby " Why pay $500 for a Titanium flashlight, when you can have a $20 dollar light that does the same thing??"... See what I mean??

Point well taken. Many people would say that. Though I would also say there is a larger difference between the performance of a Walmart flashlight and say, a Titan, than there is between two shiny silver ball chains which to the casual observer are virtually indistiguishable in regards to both aesthetics as well as functionality.

Then again, it is cool to be able to say this chain is ti, because pretty much everything is cooler in ti.

I'm sorry, but I see a huge difference in performance between two lights vs. two types of ball chains, all in varying price ranges.

If I'm carrying something around my neck, and some dude grabs the back of my ball chain and tries to choke me out with it; I definitely want it to break!

I'm guessing the titanium version is stronger than the regular $2 versions.

So, I guess I can't really figure out what you are saying.

I am excited about finding titanium ball chain - to use as a key chain, because I think that it is the best; the coolest. Why? Because it is scarce. Titanium is not easy to refine and what is refined is used for aerospace, medical implants, and golf clubs. It is also used in jewelry because besides being lightweight and strong, it is impossible to be allergic to it. (I know many folks that can not wear stainless steel, because the nickel content gives them a rash.)

I was/am excited about MrTitanium because it was the first source (after years of searching) that offered a titanium ball key chain. Avant-Gared Jewelry has had ti ball chain for a long time, but their lobster claws aren't really functional for a key chain.

But the idea of making sure that an equipment keeper should break easily is a new one for me. I honestly don't mean to be disrespectful, but I think this is a unique position.

When I was a LEO, (like everyone else) I would wear a clip-on tie in uniform. This was so that in a fight, someone couldn't grab my tie like a handle to choke me. However, when I dressed for court, I would have been laughed at if I wore a clip-on tie. When the kids get little toys to put around their necks, they have a plastic snap connector, to keep them from being choked by accident.

Do you really think that equipment should be designed to break-away in a struggle? I don't know the test strength of stainless ball chain - but I bet its more then 200 lbs. This would seem to also eliminate 550 cord as an acceptable lanyard.

The thing about titanium is that it is cool. If gold were lighter and stronger than steel, I would prefer gold over titanium. I would be thrilled to be the man with the golden gun, the golden whistle, the golden flashlight, and the golden key chain.
