I just wanted to comment on my recently new set-up on my TL-3. I know quite a few people on here have this set-up, but I am so happy with it I had to add my .02.
I recently located some of the "rare" carley 1499 bulbs(thanks plasmaman!) for use in my TL-3. I had to trim the bi-pins to fit, which was no problem, then from there it was just a typical bulb swap. I then threw in a pair of AW protected 17500's, and fired it up......
The first thing I noticed was that with the new bulb, you lose a bit of the focusability of the light. By that I mean, the hotspot is now quite a bit larger, and now in the shape of an oval(which I like for coverage). Also, I noticed that the beam was much whiter...and of course brighter!! I will admit, I was expecting more out of the bulb, since it is rated for double the lumens of the original...but after comparing it with a few of my other incand's I am very impressed.
Out of all my incand lights, this set-up now has the most ouput. Before, it was almost identical in output to my 9P, but now it is noticably brighter. Also, my Ultrastinger was brighter before the upgrade, with it now being the other way around Currently my magcharger is running the stock bulb, and off a fresh charge seems really close the the hot-rodded TL-3 in output. Due to their larger reflectors, the Mag and US slightly out throw the TL-3, but it sure puts up a damn good fight for it's relative size.
This was by far my best "bang for the buck" mod on any of my lights. Factoring in the original cost of the TL-3, this has got to be one of the cheapest incand set-ups for overall output?? I would suggest this mod to anyone who has a TL-3 in their collection.
