If it's gotta be clipless then I'm ok with that so long as it's an 18650....gotta have some runtime in my funtime!

But I gotta ask....why no clip if it's 18650?

Perhaps a 1x18500 with a clip could be done? I think I might still rather have the clipless 18650 though. I have a 1x18650 SC60 Zebralight (it has a nice low profile clip) and it's just the perfect size for an EDC (4" long), IMO. Outstanding runtime too. It just needs to be about 3 times brighter!

Well, now I'm torn - I'd like the longer runtime of the 18650 yet the small size of the single cell version is starting to really appeal to me. I guess the real answer is 'buy both' :broke:

That's why I think that the 18500 would be a great size. Much more capacity than an RCR123 but not as big as an 18650.

As the Tri-EDC head is shorter than the SST-50 head, an 18500 Tri-EDC would in actual fact be hardly any longer than the SST-50.

18500, 18500, 18500 please Mac. :)

The current clip is designed for a body that houses a 35mm long cell. If the body / cell is any longer the clip will not work and would need to be redesigned / lengthened.

The actual measurements of the SST-50 are "graceful" and provide a nice feeling in hand particulary due to the difference between the body diameter compared to the head diameter.
This difference will be less pronounced with a 18500. Even if the better runtime/capacity would be a great advantage, a 17500 would be better to not loose the original shape of the SST-50 EDC that makes this electrical torch so good looking.

Finally got somebody on my side regarding diameter. Now I just have to convince you (and Mac) 2xIMR16340 is better for maximum brightness. Still hoping so I can get my triple satisfaction.

Btw, for those of you with tri-EDCs how is the heat on these?

Personnally i don't need the maximum brightness for an EDC, so actually i prefer the compacity of a shorter body with only 1x 16340. It is my default choice until i see how the light designed for 2x 16340 looks like, maybe i will change my mind then if the shapes/measurements are well balanced.

That's why we have 3-modes for those of us who want maximum brightness.

I just performed a Test on the 18350's and AW's 18500 at a 2.8 amp load and the 18500 is out. The 18500 did best the 18350 but only by around 10%. It would not be worth it to me to redesign a body and have to stock 2 clips for only a 10% increase.

I'm in regardless of what Mac finally decides on the final design. I'm just sorry i missed the small batch of Tri-EDC's.

Sweet! I am definitely in for an aluminum neutral.
Last question, will it run ok on low and medium on a primary?

I do not recommend using a primary as the driver can pull around 2.8 amps on high and that is WAY to much for a primary. You could use a primary low and medium but......................I would not recommend it.

I'll bet that you're gonna test an 18650 too....

Thanks for the explanation on the clip.

Protected 18650s at 2900mah now have a maximum discharge rate of 5.8A, could these possibly be used in this light? I understand that it would probably lose a little (a lot?) lumen to IMR cells. Would make for some fantastic run time for this little monster. Thanks again, Mac.

Mac,

Will there be subsequent runs similar to your SST-50 EDC for us that might miss out on the 1st run? I have a feeling it's gonna be a stampede on Monday night.
Thanks
