Uh, What Exactly Is "Cree"?

There is a lot of talk here about it, but try as I might, I still don't understand what it is. Can you explain it to a low-tech sort of guy? Also, what is "Seoul", besides a city in South Korea? Thanks in advance.

Quick answer:

Cree and Seoul are two out of three main companies that produce current gen LEDs. The current gen LEDs are at least twice as efficient as the last gen LEDs so for the same power, the newer will LEDs produce twice or more light then the last gen LEDs.

Current gen LEDs:
Brand ----- Model ----- Bins
Cree ------ XR-E ------ P4, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, R2
Seoul ----- P4 -------- U-bin
Luxeon --- Rebel ------ 80, 100
Luxeon --- K2(TFFC) -- (I don't remember)

Last gen LEDs: Luxeon I, III, V and K2s.

:welcome:

Since manufatures outright lie about run time, with no basis in reality, it is very important to know what bin and type of LED is in the light. With Cree, r2 is above a q5>q4 etc. Higher bin number, the better.

Gunner nor anyone else as helpful, I am not educated about rebel 80 v. 100. http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/lites/detail.asp?value=030H&cat_id=371&type_id=8620

Which bins of rebel leds do you think are in these browning lights?

The number behind the word Rebel is the bin code. 80 means the LED puts out around 80 lumen at 350 mA, so the higher the number, the brighter.

The Rebel 100 is slightly dimmer then the Q5 but slightly more efficient(pretty close). The Rebel usually has a warmer tint. The 80 is similar to the Cree XR-E P4.

Gunner, this is what I suspected. But 130 lumens at 1 watt is very good.

What I am thinking, correct me if impossible, is to skip the cold Cree 100 lumen Energizer Hardcase head lamp (got Hardcase 80 as a wrist light). Instead get the warmer 130 lumen Rebel 1 watt Nitro. I intend to convert this to a 3 AA from the cr123 format, by whatever soldering and drilling required, and add a center strap. Pehaps I might try a single cell near front and a 2 AA pack in rear, like my Browning.

I am hoping this will raise runtime from 2.5 hour to 9 or more. But will this work, or would the voltage be too differnet?

The Rebel is around 110 lumen at 1 watt, presuming the top of the line Rebel(there are variations in the bin). 130 lumen at 1 watt is a bit out of range right now.

Which headlamps are you talking about(links)?

The voltage has to be 3v. To get 9 hours from the Nitro, you'll have to use 4 AA batteries(1 AA is around the same capacity as a CR123 battery), 2x 2 AA batteries in parallel.

I'd suggest taking this discussion to a new thread or to PM, so as not to hijack this thread further.
